When will we start seeing 5G cell boosters?

5G has been with us for several years now. It rolled out to much of the country at a time when fewer people were using their phones outside of their homes, but as the world has returned to normal, many people have traded up to 5G-capable phones and have started using 5G while out and about.

Today, you have a choice. You can have virtually unlimited high-speed internet at home. That service comes over fiber and goes into your wireless router. Or, you can have slower internet, often with data caps, on your cell phone. No wire is needed so you can get this service pretty much anywhere.

The biggest problem with this is that you’re paying twice. You’re paying once for home internet, something you probably don’t use during the day, and once for cellular internet, something you don’t use while you’re at home.

5G has the potential to deliver high-speed, virtually unlimited internet to your home OR phone using the same technology. This service, offered today by T-Mobile and other providers, gives you the option to consolidate all your internet services on one bill. It also gives you a choice of internet service provider even if your area hasn’t been served by multiple providers in the past.

The booster question

Within a few years, 5G will be the only thing that matters in cell service. However, if you look at the collection of cell phone signal boosters at Solid Signal, you’ll see it’s the same stuff that we offered five years ago. Digging a little deeper you may find that there are 5G-only cell boosters available for large facilities, but today’s boosters for home and small office work with the same frequencies that they did in the past.

The good news in all of that: the cell phone boosters we sell today, as well as the boosters sold five years ago at the dawn of the 5G era, will work with some 5G frequencies. Unless you are in a very high-density area like an urban downtown, the 5G signals you get travel on the same frequencies that were once used for 3G. That means you don’t need a different booster to use them!

Looking forward to 5G+ (also called UWB or mmWave)

In order to get the incredible speeds promised by 5G, you’ll need to use a set of frequencies that today’s cell boosters don’t handle. That’s not a reason to put off getting a booster today, though. You’ll still get that 5G signal boost, just not for the higher frequencies.

When 5G+ does completely roll out (if it rolls out to 100% of the country), this technology is going to require a LOT more cell towers. The towers will be small, but you’ll need more of them in order to get that super fast service on the super high frequencies needed for 5G. It’s not clear how many more, but it’s possible that you could see a cell tower every 500 feet or so in the future. Today you see one or two towers per mile in general.

So, it’s possible that even if you’re getting poor service today, you won’t when 5G+ finally hits your neighborhood. Depending on where you live, that could be later this year, sometime next year, or who knows.

“Fixed Wireless” installs probably won’t need a booster.

Fixed Wireless 5G means 5G cellular internet that’s actually built into your home. An antenna sits on your roof and provides you with home internet just the way that a fiber connection does now. It’s pretty unlikely you won’t need a booster if you have a fixed wireless installation, because companies like T-Mobile limit fixed wireless to areas with great cell signal. Today’s fixed wireless systems, like those you can get from Signal Connect, work really well in the areas they’re used. They’re an excellent alternative to traditional wired internet. If you’d like to know more about fixed wireless, call us at 888-233-7563.

Think toward the future but act now

If you have bad cell service now inside your home or office, don’t wait. Buy a cell booster now. Get great cell service with a cell booster and keep shopping at Solid Signal for the cellular accessories you need. If you’re not sure what you need, call the experts at Solid Signal. We’re here during East Coast business hours at 888-233-7563. If it’s after hours, fill out the form below. Either way, we’ll be happy to recommend a booster for spaces from 5 square feet to 500,000 square feet!
