What's the REAL reason we don't have new HD just now?

Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but I noticed how quickly the HD PPV channels were thrown out there--$$$$, Money, $$$$. Do you note that some of the PPV movies are movies that run on other HD Channels we already have OR ARE ABOUT TO GET (MGM)!

Has anyone been stupid enough to pay for the PPV HD movie that has or already is playing on another HD Channel?

How stupid does DISH think we are? If they can pull that one on us, what else will they pull?

So, why would they put anymore "free" National HD channels, when they can milk the $$$$$$ on the PPV channels!!???

Again, sorry for the cynical view, but has DISH give us ANY reason or purpose to not have added the NEW popular HD channels that Direct has (or some of them)--I am shocked we don't see FOX HD or FX or Sci Fi HD at least. I'd love the MGM-HD and Smithsonian.

They got a bargain on the bottom of the barrel VOOM rehash and so we are lucky to get garage-sale HD at this point, I guess.

I have been thinking for weeks of ditching DISH and going to Direct, but am waiting a little longer to see what DISH does AND until I can get a better deal on Direct HD DVR's AND find a way to preserve my HD collection on my External HD which won't work on Direct.

Anyone have any inside information on WHY we don't have the new HD channels? I'd be a lot less liekly to ditch DISH and WAIT if I knew why and how long!

Of course you fail to point out that prior to the HD PPV's, we got all the discovery HD channels, Big 10 Net, A&E, Food, HGTV, etc months BEFORE the D* people got them.

As a conspiracy buff myself, what about this angle?, could it be that D* may have gotten some sort of exclusivity on those channels for a couple of months? Not enough for them to be able to advertise them as exclusively on D*, but enough to make it look like the competition isnt doing anything?

The honest answer is space.

They have been removing HD PPV to make room for new channels, (NHL HD and NBA HD) two channels I could care less about, but I know other people have been waiting for them.

Please delineate the entire process of:

1. Viewership analysis:
- HD versus SD cost benefit analysis
- Installed base of HD equipment and HD subs
- Cost versus estimated increase in HD subs due to added HD content
2. Negotiation of carriage and agreed cost per subscriber
3. Installation of equipment needed to add the channel to E*'s ground to bird transmission system
4. Uplink testing and broadcast certification
5. Implement changes / tracking for all support, marketing, and technical documentation

This is very brief, simple view of what it takes to makes changes in a large corporation responsible to report fully documented business processes and risk analysis to the shareholders, the SEC, and to the subscribers, upon request.

Now with all this riding on your back, make a profit in a cutthroat business where some of your base demands more channels and the others demand lower costs and provide customer support to every caller who can't change the blinking 12:00 on their vcr or program their microwave oven.

Makes me want to run right out and start my own satellite broadcast service company!

Whatever the reason is.....i hope we get some real HD channels before the year is over. I wonder if indeed D* paid for exclusive rights to carry some HD channels, how long will those rights last?

Scott,

I thought that according to digiblur there is plenty of space for a few more channels, as is?

While it is true there is space up there, we dont know if they are holding that space open incase there is a transponder failure or something like that.

There is more room on 61.5 then there is on 129, but they are not going to put national HD on 61.5 without having it available on 129. I think its the space at 129 that may be the issue.

Thanks, Scott. Since you put it that way, now it makes sense. That's probably what they were talking about recovering bandwidth in the retailer chat.

Crap. They really need to get that new bird up there.

Space, huh? Then why are some of the HD PPV channels not showing "recent" PPV vintage movies and showing OLD movies--such as Silence of the Lambs which showed up recently. Maybe they read this forum, as I don't see any oldies up there now.

Why not cut the HD PPV channels to 5 and some of the many sports channels and add 3 of the most wanted HD nationals?

I realize with a Space problem, I can't expect all the Direct TV now has, but what about SOME of them--something that cuts across the board for news, movies, sci-fi?

Also, plenty of room if they could dump the VOOM back in the trashbin--what a waste of bandwidth--mainly because of the constant reruns and limited content. If they had ALL the original VOOM channels, then fine, but....they don't.

Again, they are losing more than they gain by trying to trick us into paying for older movies.

I can go to Direct and get ALL my locals in HD, which I can't with DISH, pay less for the HD $15 vs $20 and pay less all-around for the basically the same channel selection I get now--less by $10 overall. I'm hanging on because of the DVR, possibility of more HD...but not for long.

I am not defending E* here, but the way you describe the Voom channels is very similar to how my friends describe the crappy programming on all their new D* HD channels like SciFi and USA. At least the content on the Voom channels is actually HD. I also don't see that there is any more re-running of content than most cable channels. Could there be a few less Voom channels to consolidate content? Yes. Do they belong in the trashbin? Not until someone else comes up with something better.

I am so sick of the "I dont like/watch this channel so they should dump it" that goes on around here. Guess what, everyone has different tastes, if they didnt, we would only have 10 channels total.

Very True and I have never understood why anyone would use that argument. I do agree though that the number of PPV can be brought down a bit to add these numbers. Also do we really need so many versions of Big Ten? I'm not a sports guys so I don't know nor care for it, which is why I am asking. Is it the same channel or different versions of the same that run different content?

the other channels are just like the RSNs, they just have the dish logo on when not in use. They are only on for Alternate games, 2 or 3 games on a week during football season, but come basketball season you will see them in action alot more.

This may be a stupid question but when they finally launch a new satellite, will it take the place of 129? I ask because I'm wondering if we have to reposition the dishes, etc.

Budget - RG6 Compression Tools?

722 work without dish
