What to do with my owned 722 when I move to Hopper?

Well I have finally decided to go forward with stepping up to Hopper and am wondering what to do with my 722. I have a good bit of kids shows recorded onto the internal HD so I may just use it for a kids room. I know that I cannot use my external HDs with a non active unit, but has anybody taken an archived recording and copied it to the internal HD Via a Linux computer. In other words, take the internal drive out and connect it to a PC and move recordings on or off it and then put it back into the 722 and watch the shows? I know I can do that with external drives but not sure about doing it with the internal drive.
Or perhaps just sell it?

I'd sell it... I'm not sure you will be able to look at the recordings after a short time on an non-activated 722....

Sell it or just hang on to it in case Dish will ever allow you to activate it on your Hopper account.

To be safe, I'd transfer all shows you want to keep from the 722 to an EHD. You would still be able to view those shows on the EHD with your Hopper, provided you don't start up a new account (keep the same account number that you had with the 722).

I thought I could view recordings on an non activated 722 as long as I'm on the sat feed.

If it's not activated you will lose access to those recordings eventually. The DVR functions will no longer be available.

Transfer all the recordings from the 722 to an ehd. The Hopper can use an ehd from a 722. A Joey can access ehd's paired to a Hopper. The Hopper will be able to access 2 ehd's at the same time.

To my knowledge nobody has written to the internal drive on a 722.
I don't remember seeing it done either, figured I'd ask. In my case if I could still watch recorded shows indefinitely, being able to add other recorded shows would be nice.
Since the HD is a sata drive (and owned) it would be easy enough to copy recordings from an external (hopper or 722 ) via PC.

You may be able to copy files from an external drive, but they are all encrypted and cannot be played back on a PC.

That I know, but if I copy them to the 722's HD using the PC, would it work?
No. Once the account is disabled on the DVR, it doesn't have the key to decrypt the EHD files anymore; regardless of where they reside.

Once the activation lapses (either through deactivation or through the absence of an update hit), you probably won't be able to access the DVR features (never mind the programming on or off the internal drive). It is fairly involved just to get the DVR to tune a free satellite channel. The DVR won't be a complete brick, just the equivalent of a deactivated 311 receiver.

IIRC, ATSC tuner functionality disappears as well.

Thanks for the info. As it would appear I'll lose the DVR functionality, I will probably archive my recordings to ext HD and then see how the hopper works out. I can add it to my collection of retired Dish receivers.

All the ehd's I had on my 722 work just fine on my Hoppers. Just copy all your recordings on the 722 to an ehd. Use a 2tb hd and you should be able to move everything over to a single ehd. Then you will be able to watch all your recordings from either the Hopper or the Joey.

Ya know what.. being able to access the EHD on a Hopper from a Joey is just a punch in the mouth to me and others with two Hoppers. I should be able to access the EHD on Hopper #1 from #2 if I wanted to if the Joey can but Nooooooo lol I mean wtf Dish.

Are you saying that you can hook up 2 EHDs to a HopperWS.

Again, you can connect up to 4 powered USB drives to 1 or more 4-way port expanders on any of the 3 built-in ports.
Only the first 2 will be able to do all commands. The other 2 can only be used to transfer recordings (files).
All can be active at the same time, that gets confusing.
