What phone on AT&T would you get?

Ok, small problem with looking at the Tilt 2. Only 2 of the AT&T stores around me even carry the phone. Both of them don't have one on display. :( are all of the TP2 phones pretty much the same? I might have to go to sprint to take a look at one.

I believe the CDMA ones came with WinMo 6.1 and the AT&T one came with WinMo 6.5 so there will be some differences. The keyboard is different between the CDMA and GSM version. AT&T decided to get rid of the numbers at the top and put characters most people rarely use, and put the numbers as a shift of some keys. Idiot move to be honest with you... but I'm biased since I use numbers more than % & ( characters.

But the phone hardware is pretty much the same... hopefully if you do get the phone you'll be putting an upgraded ROM on it, so I wouldn't worry about the software on it as you'll make it better in a 5 minute flash ;)

Well I did find a store that an employee had one and he let me play for a few minutes. I really liked the phone but there was one issue that I am having problems with. It really seems like you need to press the screen really hard to get it sense your touch. I really like the iPhone when it comes to this much better. Maybe it was just the phone I was using but I am not sure.

So far that has been the only drawback I have found.

I don't have the Touch Pro2...only the Touch Pro, but they are about the same phone just smaller. I'd say it was something with the phone, as I can tap on my screen very lightly and it still registers...and that is with a screen protector on it. Maybe Don can speak up on that.

I haven't heard anyone complaining about having to mash on the screen compared to their Touch Pro 1 so I can see it being different between these two phones, otherwise I would have seen several threads on it.

Use a stylus

Well, Dodger King summed it up. Use a stylus and one is along for the ride on the TP2.

The big difference here is trade offs-

With the screen on the TP2 you get higher resolution for smaller on screen keyboards and other fine detail touch precision, but you have to use the stylus to zero in on the right place to touch. I also use the Howard Hughes invention of trimming one of my finger nails to a point to enable using it as a stylus for the precision tap as required. The addition of 3D touch Flow software on the TP2 you can also use your whole finger to touch and drag, double tap and scroll around on web pages, zoom in and out etc too. In a way you get both precision and the larger touch area like the iphone screen. Without Touch Flo 3D the resistive screen is restricted to using the slider at the right and bottom to maneuver around a web page. If you want to scroll down a page listing of contacts, just take your finger that quickly swipe it vertically across the screen in a downward motion and the scroll will spin down the list, when you want to stop, just touch the screen with your finger.

With the capacitive screen you have to work with larger areas of touch on the screen and the stylus won't work because it offers no capacitance change like your skin does on the screen surface. But, with proper on screen keyboard designs, you can achieve excellent keyboard accuracy with a larger key surface contact area. I remember my first experience with the iphone I tried to use my finger nail and a stylus and it didn't work. The disadvantage of this is the keyboard takes up a larger screen area than would be required with a resistive touch screen.

One is not necessarily better than the other, just different features and you have to decide what's best for you.

Havent used my stylus since WinMo 6.5. There is not a need for it anymore. Finger works great.
When I was testing them out, due to the higher resolution and smaller icons, I needed to use a stylus. I usually just used a pen cap. Worked perfectly fine.

Glad to see you do not need it with a newer OS.

I didn't have a problem with the size of the icons. The problem is that it seemed like you needed to press way harder than should be needed on the screen.

I dont have small fingers or hands. I rarely use the on screen keyboard. I hate them with a passion. I only use it for yes or no answers and that is it. I have to use a real keyboard with lines and feel. Otherwise I would have a glass keyboard at my desk. That would be a pain to use...my point exactly with smartphones without keyboards. IMHO..they arent reall smart if there isnt a keyboard.

Then I must be wanting something beyond just "smart" I want a genius phone. No keyboard. It does everything with plain English ( good and bad English) sentence commands. Until we get there, I, too, want a keyboard.

My main beef with the keyboard, is switching to and from it all the time.

OK, a couple more questions that I have.

1) If you install a 3rd party rom how hard is it to go back to the stock rom?

I have read that many of the issues with the touch screen sensitivity seem to go away once you update the rom from stock. I would like to try this but if you can't go back to the stock rom then it might not be worth it.

2) Anybody know of any good tools that allow the sync to a mac?

3) Anybody heard much about the LG Expo. Looks like a cool phone. The only downside I can see is that the screen is only 3.2" instead of 3.6".

1. Easy. Plug in Phone. Open Stock ROM file. Go through the typical Next, Next, Next. A few minutes later, your phone is stock.

2. No mac here. I never sync my phone, only time I hook it up is to flash a new rom.

3. Nope.

This is what I was hoping to hear. I really am leaning toward trying out the phone. I just want to make sure I can return it if it does not fit my needs.

Don, right now I am about 80% sure that I will be switching phones. The Tilt 2 is leading with the LG Expo a close second. I am just wondering what other phones will be out prior to my upgrade. Just on a waiting game right now.

Went back at lunch today to play with a tilt 2 one more time. The touch screen was much more responsive when using my nail to navigate. This makes it more likely that I will be switching in March.

My only problem is trying to get my music and movies converted to a format that the iPhone and windows mobile will support.

Get a PC. Seriously, get a cheep little laptop or something that is not that much money in which you can sync and organize the music for your WM phone. It does not have to be fancy.

The one nice thing about me using a PC for my iTunes library is that windows media player automatically converts and saves my iTunes music as well. So I can use iTunes for my iPhone and Windows media for my home network (music played from my computer on my network through my PS3 or my HR20 will only work with Windows Media).

I have an 8gb micro SD card in my phone. I just plug in the phone to the USB port on the PC. It asks if you want ActiveSync, Internet Sharing, or Disk Drive. I hit Disk drive and it pops up as a drive on my screen. Drag and drop the MP3's and go to the media tab on the phone. It will find them on the SD card and download the album art over the cellular connection.
