What can you do with a 721?

Any ideas on what you can do with your 721 (aside from a paperweight) after they shut off service to it in November?

Erase the copy of Linux they have on there now and put your own version on it and play with it or remove the hard drive and use it in your computer.

Who cares if it's a good or bad idea? It's useless otherwise. $10 trade-in, parts or practice hacking. Personally, I'd like to see someone get a version of Linux to run well on it AND have supporting software of some type.

I don't know the answer, but I'm sure it'll be sung to the tune of "What can you do with a drunken sailor....." :p

I sent mine in for the $10.

The 721 cam loaded with some games. Perhaps the games will still work and one could use it as nostalgic video game box. That is the ONLY thing the 721 could possibly could be good for, if the games are left functional.

Realistically, I'm pulling the drive.

**Anyone know if the Platinum Plus remote from a 721 will work with another Rx??? I have a 622 and 508 that are still subbed.***

Donate it to your local Discovery Center for their next "take apart" day. Let the kids strip it bare and maybe learn something.

I'm facing this same decision. I would just send it back for $10, but I suppose I could use the hard drive for something.

Does anyone know how big the hard drive is in a 721?

In mine, it's a Maxtor DiamondMax 16 4R120L0 QuickView - 120GB, 5400RPM, 2MB Cache.

The "QuickView" part of it it says (according to searches on the web) that it's tuned to be used for PVRs/STBs... I think I'll still use it in an old PC....

All 721 had 120 GB HDD, most of them are from Maxtor.

The disks doesn't had any issue to use them in PC.

Do tested it before reuse, if there are any bad sectors.

The remote should work fine with the 508.

It should do TV1 only on the 622 (i.e. only the IR from the remote will work with the 622).

Surely the hard drive and remote are worth more than the $10.

I wouldn't trust the hard drive, and the remote is of little use - I use universal remotes and am disinclined to peddle stuff on eBay. Of course, maybe they would be worth selling in our classifieds here.

fill up the drive with recordings (100 hrs)before you cancel service, then unhook the satellite input and watch the dvr recordings at your leisure.

Thx, KStuart! I was playing around with the UHF part - didn't think to try the IR side. Our 508 has a newer remote already - just didn't realize how new until now!

Good idea, and I've watched the stuff that was on it from before (it was desubbed back in 2005/2006). Lot's of PPVs and free preview weekends from back then. Of course, HDTV from the 622 looks WAY better now! :)

Move .dpd movie from PocketDish back to 622
