i want to know what are to tall tale warning signs of a failure of a Dish VIP 722k. i want to know as i have a feeling one of the two 722k DVR that's in my home is about to quit working. it's the one connected to living room TV and my bedroom TV.

in the past week, it has crashed a couple of times when the screen became frozen and then went dead only for me to hit the red reset button on the DVR box itself, then earlier tonight shortly after 11:30 PM, the DVR quit allowing TV 2 (the TV in My Room) to rewind/back up live programming and pause it and won't let me watch a previously recorded show that i DVRed (i checked the recorded program to see if it will let me see it with no issues). but yet on TV 1 (Living Room TV), it's working fine in the rewind/back up live programming part.

is this a common issue with a DVR with a possible hard drive failure or an heating issue with the DVR itself.

if so, i think a phone call to Dish to get an order for a replacement may have to happen.

When I saw a hard drive problems on a 722, it would not properly do 30 second skip forward (would just jump to live TV) on live TV buffer (i.e. you are watching live TV a few minutes behind). It also had trouble with trick play on DVRed programs.

You usually hear the hard drive clicking, choppy video and sluggish response times where a hard reset does not correct the issue.

Best advice is to unplug the receiver and let it cool down for a day, and then reconnect it and try to move your shows to an external drive before its it late.

I beat a bad hard drive twice just by letting the receiver cool down for several hours before trying to transfer content.

Ok, if you want to try clearing nvram and then reformatting your drive, that MAY fix the issue if it's caused by drive errors.

Hit these buttons in turn on your #1 remote: Menu-6-3-Info-Right-Left-TV/Video to clear the NVRAM and after that is done, format: Menu-6-3-Info-Right-Left-Play-Play-Recall

IF you have recordings, this will WIPE the internal drive, and you will also lose your timers! So back them up to an external drive, and back up your timers to the remote. I've seen it fix the dvr right up, so is worth a try.

noticed strange hd picture tonight?
