I have read a number of posts regarding the VOOM box, OTA,
activated, not authorized, etc.
My comments:
On ebay "caveat emptor" or in English "buyer beware" aptly applies.
that said, I have made many good deals and got a lot of items I
wanted at bargain prices. A working VOOM box that will scan and
then receive OTA channels at this point in time and cost around $50
with shipping is a very good deal. There is no reason to assume
that the OTA will stop working on such a box. What will eventually
happen is that there will be newer software and hardware for OTA
that will make most of us techies update and upgrade. In the
meantime, the DSR-550 VOOM STB offers very good OTA PQ and
reception. It locks fairly marginal signals well and the color is
very good.
As I said at the beginning, buyer beware. I would forget the
verbiage on the Ebay Auction listing regarding the VOOM STB and ask
the buyer directly if the unit received OTA after VOOM closed shop?
And then I would go on to ask if he could verify that it is
currently receiving OTA. Depending on those answers, I would decide
whether to bid or not. Any vague answer or an "I don't know" or "I
am not responsible" would disqualify that seller's item IMHO.
People on this forum have been offering up units that they are
certifying work and that may be a better option. But the ebay
mechanism of feedback is a very powerful motivator for honesty so
check feedback scores and ratings if you go with ebay.
I have a box that I reluctantly sold for $100 to a persistent gent
from Canada and after shipping and pay pal costs plus my time to box
and ship, I netted less than $70 so I really am not all that excited
about selling either of my other two boxes. It's just not worth the
effort to me at this point. I will hang onto them for now and see
how it goes after the bad sellers are weeded out. I do have
4 "activated" or "authorized" or NIB, etc. that I could sell but I
know they would not work for the buyer so they will sit in storage
in the hopes that someday there will be a use for them. I have
enough doorstops already.
I write this in the hopes that it will hlep to keep folks from
anticipating the arrival of a new toy only to feel the
dissapointment of a ripoff.
