[VOOM] Billing

I just looked at my Dec/Jan bill and I'm still being charged 9.50 per
receiver (x2) and 5.00 for a multiIRD for a total of

$24.00
+ $ 8.57 Franchise Fee
+ $40.00 Plus Packs
+ $39.90 Voom
=======
$112.47

I thought starting December 1st, the receivers were just $5.00ea and no ird
?

Robert,
I think basic VOOM would go up by $10 then. to $49.95 What is the
frandchise fee? FCC dollars? And the $24? $9.50per receiver and $5 for two
IRD's? equals $24. What's a multi IRD fee- 2 units or more?
So you were expecting $10 only for the two receivers but then VOOM goes up
to $49.95/month right. So the difference would be around $4 less with the
newer deal and the rate hike. Maybe they will back bill but I think the new
deal requires cancellation and then a new account right now. That's what
the CSR told me. to take advantage of any new promo you have to be a new
subscriber so you need to cancel and then start all over again. I wonder if
they have outbounders who work you into the new deal if they are convinced
you are leaving VOOM. Everyone else does.

Why do you need a multiIRD? And Does Starz and
Showtime come in? I read that it could be dropped at
anytime. What's that about?

[VOOM] Re: Billing

Why would there be a franchise fee. I didn't think there would be a
franchise fee on Satellite. $8.57 is a pretty big fee.

Robert:
I think thegrod pretty well answered for you.
thegrod:
The franchise fee is the state tax. The multi IRD fee is the programming fee for additional IRD.
CHAD POLAND:
Having multi IRD's, just means Robert has at least 2 STB's, so his family can watch more than 1 channel at a time. With the $40 plus packs he has VaVaVoom, so Showtime and Starz should be coming in for him. And the possibility of them being dropped comes from Voom borrowing 2 transponders from the beginning and maybe having to give them up, but with the new satellite (Rainbow 2) coming on line at the first of the year that should not be a problem.
traderbbc:
The franchise fee is what Voom renamed their tax when people started complaining about the collection of illegal taxes.

Does the franchise fee vary by locality? Is it really an illegal tax?

Yes.
thegrod said:

It was in some states.

EDIT:
For example, here in Georgia they can't tax programming, but they can tax rental equipment. So, like myself, if you own your equipment there's no tax.
Voom taxed everything, that was illegal. To top it off, Georgia and probably other states new nothing about it.

Think this is the reason why Voom needs the DVR reasonably priced and=20
those extra stations. Everybody has a reason for going with one or=20
the other. Mine was the DVR, no OTA antenna hanging off the side of=20
the house, the ability which I didn't mention to hook up as many TV's=20
as I want to by just plugging in another Coax line without being=20
charged and being able to do it myself. I have 4 tv's and would have=20
went with the 3 tv package as the 4th is in my daughters room and not=20
essential. Thing is with cable she still has a TV. Hard to say who=20
is correct because everyone has their own needs. As I said before if=20
they follow thru with the additional stations and the DVR and if they=20
really wanted to separate themselves provide local stations in HD=20
thru the Satellite without the OTA I think they would be signing up a=20
lot more people. I can live with the OTA if they do the other two so=20
its not a deal breaker providing they are reasonably priced for the=20
DVR. They have to be better and cheaper than anyone else if they are=20
going to succeed and I for one am hoping they do but we are pioneers=20
on HD whether we believe we are or not. Out of all my friends one=20
has HD from Dish and I will have HD from Comcast. Probably only=20
about 4 of us who have a HD set (I have a projector). I want to=20
replace my upstair set with a 26" LCD which even buying a no name=20
will cost me $1,100. The 31" set I have there is 7 years old but=20
still has a great picture and I paid $900 for it then as it was a top=20
of the line set. Its hard to convince the wife I need to get rid of=20
it cause I want HD, hopefully when she sees HD on the Projector she=20
will hate watching the upstairs set and I can convince her down the=20
line but its still not chump change to most people who aren't going=20
to shell out another $1,000 for a TV set when the one they have works=20
fine. What household which probably has at least 3 sets has the=20
extra money to toss them and buy new HD sets, its gonna be a while=20
and the Government should have moved faster instead of delaying the=20
mandates. Again, if Voom does what they say they are going to do and=20
will install the stuff for free I'm hoping by April I'm Vooming, if=20
not I will have to accept what Comcast has to offer which is still a=20
better deal than Dish and Directs HD package and quite frankly when=20
you factor in they charge no extra money for HD, charge .20 per month=20
more for a HD box as compared to their normal box and charge 9.95 for=20
a DVR when Direct wants a grand and Dish wants $500 and change and=20
add the fact there is no committment its pretty damn hard to beat.=20=20
No one has the total deal yet and its probably gonna be a while=20
before they do. Hoping Voom can get there first.=20
