so nh
I just upgraded my home to HD. I used to have a 501 DVR with the Standard Definition (SD) Dish which has now been upgraded to the new HD Dish. I used to take my 501 DVR with me when I went to my second home and plugged in in to a 2nd SD dish I had installed there. I read that this new ViP211-HD is backwards compatable. Can I take this ViP211-HD to my second home and will it work with the older SD Dish? I know it won't work in HD mode but will it work in SD mode with the older Dish? Any insight would be great! Thanks.

It will work with the old dish and you will get HD on the channels that broadcast HD on the 110 and 119 sat. You will not get the 129 sat. I know because I did the same thing went I went to AZ. But I did install the 1000.2 so I could get them all.

The OP shows the location as "so nh" so I am guessing southern New Hampshire. Wouldn't that be EA country? How hard is it to flip flop between the archs like this? Clearly his old system was a 500 or maybe even a 300. Yeah, I have noticed in my area some people never even went to the 500 when that came out.
