After much pain, I figured out how to use my 811 with my sony remote commander (IR) remote. Now, since I have a 211 on the way, I was wondering if anyone has any experience using the 211 with an aftermarket universal remote and if I should expect this capability to be available?

Why not just change the 211 remote's address to that of the 811. Unless you have both in the same room, this should work. If you never had set the address, it will still be on 1, the reprogrammed value on many universal remotes.

If both are in the same room use the front panel power buttons to enable one at time or control the 811 with the UHF after blinding the IR sensor with thick tape. Several variations without even changing the address.

I use a Harmony 600 series remote with my 211, works just fine. I checked before I bought my 211 that the harmony would support it. Also, odds are not much is changing I am sure with remote codes with dish, just some minor changes I would bet on newer remotes, but the basics most likely did not change.
