vBulletin forum software Q?

I'm wanting to migrate from an MSN group to my own website forum. Health related, not satellite.
How much of a learning curve is there to vBulletin. I've been playing with the demo site now for the last hour and my head already hurts.
I like the versatility of the program and the price is right @ $160 per instance (or less).
How much problem is it to get rolling...? I figure I can work on it for a while(30-60 days) before unleashing it to my current members.
I know a lot of basic HTML, but nothing about php or MySQL. Will that be a shortcoming for setting this thing up?
I've just DL'd the manual and am going to take a day or 2 to look through it. It just seems like a monumental amount of work. I respect Scott for the admin he does here at SGUS.
