There was a thread a couple of years ago without an answer- if I cancel Dish, can I use my (owned) Hopper 2 with Sling for OTA recordings? Or is it a door stop at that point?
?? What does the dish do for OTA ?While you might be able to watch OTA programming, provided you leave the dish up
If the dish is not aimed and hooked up to the receiver you will get nothing except a screen for aiming the dish.?? What does the dish do for OTA ?
True, but without a satellite signal, the box is going to dormant in a month or two and be totally unusable...Press the MENU button, then choose GUIDE to get past or out of that screen/menu
I have a similar setup, but the key is still to leave the receiver connected to the satellite signal. Without the satellite signal, there will be no EPG, and the receiver will not even let you tune to any OTA channel with no guide data at all. (There does not have to be guide data for the specific OTA channel you are trying to tune, there just has to be some guide data anywhere in the guide.)That used to be the case, yes. I could be mistaken, but MikeD-C05 has a box that I believe is disconnected, or at least not activated, for months and is still working.
My 211k is not authorized any longer ,but is hooked up to the satellite , so I can power my Terk 44 antenna that clips on to the dish and gives both satellite and ota on the same cable. Have to have a second dish for ota ,since I have the hopper 3 and you can 't diplex the signal. But yes,the ota channels work fine and have guide data, but I can't record any of them. That used to be the case, yes. That is because you are using a ViP211k, which will not work as a DVR unless it is activated, because it needs an external hard drive. The question is whether a DVR with a built-in hard drive will still work for recording OTA when it is deactivated. I have had success with a ViP722k, but I have never deactivated any Hopper, so I do not know if the HWS will work. It might also depend on the color of the Smart Card. The older receivers with the purple G3 Smart Card usually give access to more free features (such as free previews, OTA, and DVR functionality) when they are deactivated, while the ones with the white G4 Smart Card usually do not. The HWS is new enough that it probably has the white G4 Smart Card.My 211k is not authorized any longer ,but is hooked up to the satellite , so I can power my Terk 44 antenna that clips on to the dish and gives both satellite and ota on the same cable. I can record OTA on my deactivated H2 and I do get guide data for the same OTA channels that I got data for with a subscription. That is because you are using a ViP211k, which will not work as a DVR unless it is activated, because it needs an external hard drive. Too late too edit previous post but thought I would mention that autohop works also.I can record OTA on my deactivated H2 and I do get guide data for the same OTA channels that I got data for with a subscription.
Yes on a deactivated receiver.Even on a deactivated receiver ? I know it works on OTA recordings though.
