We currently have DirecTV sat dish and want to upgrade to HD DVR. Will the installer have to drill a new hole in the side of our home to accommodate this new dish? or will he be able to use the existing cable that is run to the TV receiver?

Maybe. If he puts in a new SWM LNB dish then the existing cable will be fine. The Single Wire Management system gives you full utilization of the two tuners in a HD DVR with just one line to the receiver. The newer dishes are larger and heavier so expect some new mounting requirements. If he puts in one of the older but still acceptable 5LNB Slimline dishes then he'll want to run up to four lines into your house or at least another line to give you full utilization of the two tuners in the HD DVR. Obviously the newer SWM model is the way to go and seems to have become the standard install around here but I can't speak for your area.

SWM is not permitted for upgrades, D*'s new standardized chargeable work form (which all HSP's are required to use now) charges $120 for SWM LNB not including any receiver swaps if you have legacy equipment
