I am a newby for satellite service. I currently have Charter Cable. My condo is prewired with one cable to each room from a “headend” in a closet. Directv will replace Charter service next week. The dish will be installed near one room tv outlet. Directv multi-switch will be installed at the cable termination in this room. The HD DVR and two other receivers can be served from this location. The cable from this location to the old “headend” will then be able to connect to one other room, if splitters cannot be used. I have ordered a total of four standard receivers.

I have a broadband amplifier with 1Ghz max frequency rating with 15db gain. Is it possible to use a 1Ghz two outlet splitter to serve two standard receivers? What is the frequency range for the satellite signal?

No, standard satellite signals can not be split. Satellite doesn't work like cable, it sends a control voltage back up the line to the dish. This control voltage does two things. It powers the LNB and it also selects the proper bank of transponders for the channel desired.

This control voltage is at two levels-13v for the odd transponders and 18v for the even transponders. If you try to combine the control voltages from a receiver looking for an odd transponder with one from a receiver looking for an even transponder, the receiver with the 18v signal will override the 13v signal every time.

D* is coming out with a "single wire multiswitch" that will allow splitting of the satellite signal on certain receivers but it is in beta testing at this time and is not generally available.

Are you able to run four cables into your "head end"? If not, you'll again have problems. I'd check with your installer before the day of installation.

Thank you, Newshawk.

There will be no problem in running the four cables from the dish to the new "headend".
