Trying to get OTA from 40 Miles Away

I would like to get the off airs from Atlanta. I live approximately 40 miles from downtown Atlanta. After putting my info in Antenna Web it returned as follows.


* red - uhf WTBS-DT 17.1 TBS ATLANTA GA 143° 34.4 20
* red - vhf WXIA-DT 11.1 NBC ATLANTA GA 146° 37.3 10
* red - uhf WGCL-DT 46.1 CBS ATLANTA GA 143° 34.4 19

* violet - uhf WSB-DT 2.1 ABC ATLANTA GA 147° 35.9 39
* violet - uhf WUPA-DT 43.1 CW ATLANTA GA 149° 37.0 43


What set up would you guys recommend. I have tried several of the indoor antennas with no luck and I guess I am looking at the out door variety. Or maybe putting one in my attic. My main concern is picking up WUPA-DT due to it being the only station that I do not get in HD from E* and it having two shows I really like. Please let me know what you guys think any advise is appreciated.

The violet stations say you need a fringe to deep fringe solution such as a CM4228 or Antennas Direct 91-XG probably with a pre-amp.

Only problem may be WXIA-DT since it's channel 10.

The 4228 has 6db gain on that channel, so it might work. If not , you can use a CM7777 pre-amp and join a VHF and UHF antennas since it has both UHF and VHF inputs.

You could try it there, but an attic install cuts signal strength in half and can introduce multipath (reflections off ducting, etc.).

The 4228 is about 40 inches tall and 40 inches wide - is your attic large enough?

You might loose ABC and CW (violet rated signal strength).

1. Do you think an Channel Master 3679 with a CM7777 amp would be able to get me all my channels or would you still prefer the CM4228 with amp?

2. Would either have issues if any channels change in 2009?

3. Also do you think I would need a Rotator?

I also suggest the 4228. It's best VHF channel is 10. The preamp I like is the Winegard HDP-269.

The 3679 will certainly work after 2009. I don't know about the 4228. I didn't look up Atlanta's final channel selection.

You won't need a rotator.

Heres my info (im closer than you of course). Ive got a Philips(sold at lowes) 51 element in the attic of my 2 story rental townhome. Ive got 100 on everything except CBS, it stays around 90.

Wanted to give you a reference if you go with the attic and the CM wont fit. The Philips is a UHF/VHF/FM

I posted above, I have a philips 51 element in my attic that you can buy at Lowes.

Here are the specs:

Receive signals from up to 140 miles away.Tune in channels 2 through 69, plus FM.Maximum range: VHF/140 miles, UHF/80 miles, FM/120 miles

you don't need one. The CM 4228 is the best antenna for the ATL . While I use a Radio Shack Vu-140, I would have never bought it if i had known better. Got mine in 2001. Where are you located/

Another vote for the CM4228. Awesome antenna. I've even installed them for use with VHF channels 8 and 9. Even a analog channel 7 looked great on it. I wasn't expecting the analog 7 to look like it did.

In another case also used it for a channel 9 analog reception at 40 miles with zero issues.
