a 49 % jump in revenue was not enough because of increased spending to attract subs.
TiVo late Thursday reported a net loss of $10.8 million, or 13 cents a share, compared with a last year's net loss of $4.4 million, or 7 cents a share, in the same quarter. Analysts were expecting a loss of 24 cents a share.
Revenue climbed to $39.8 million from $26.7 million a year earlier. Service revenues surged 77 percent to $24.3 million, while revenue from hardware more than doubled to $18.6 million.
Research and development expenses jumped 41 percent to $8.1 million, while sales and marketing costs rose 34 percent to $6 million.
Subscriptions grew by 288,000 in the latest quarter to about 1.9 million. TiVo in May projected subscriptions would increase by 265,000 to 300,000.
Of the new subscriptions added, about 63,000 were with TiVo, while 225,000 came through the DirecTV home-satellite system.
