Don't tip the man who goes above and beyond the job description to get you installed . I understand the stinking thinking, but what goes around comes around...Kudos for the man tipping the guy who did not try to charge him any custom fees for trenching...I have installed stuff in people's houses for a long long time...I don't feel like I deserve a tip on any one job I complete, but when you go above and beyond, it does feel nice to be appreciated...I work in Memphis, TN and the two poor states that border it. If a day goes by that a customer doesn't ask me for a cigarrette or a ride somewhere , I consider that my tip...A TIP means, to insure prompt service...not, I ain't paying crap because that's his job...Just depends on what part of the US you work in, if you work in the north, tips are a big part of your income, if you work in the south, you better bring cigarettes, cokes and candy for your customers...Continue with that thinking...That should get you very far in life....

I had a horrible experience w/Dtv this past week...you can see my other thread *post* for info...
The previous tech that came disappeared and I didnt hear from him again.
So when this tech showed up & went above and beyond - yes, I tipped.
Normally do I tip? No.
My husband is also in the service industry (HVAC) - does he get tips? Rarely.
So I see the point of not tipping "just for doing their job" but I do believe in showing appreciation of going above and beyond the "call of duty."
I was all "hooked up" and it was operational, but Dtv cancelled some of my channels when they activated the new receiver, and he stayed while I was on the phone w/them (after I told him he could leave) to make sure I was all set. (No I'm not a hotty and yes my husband was home so no other motive there!) lol
So - no, he wasnt trying to charge me extra for any cables or boxes, etc. that should've been included anyway. He was just taking a few minutes more of his time...

Doing the job correctly is part of the job, if the installer wanted to do something that wasn't included in the work order, well that's his fault.
Really? That's pretty incredible right there. Sounds like you are the guy who tries to get everything little thing out of people, and when they look to you after doing a great job, you just smile and say" goodbye".
So for every guy that takes off and doesn't complete the job, you feel the need to take advantage of the one's who do a great job, and even go above and beyond?
Isn't that just the same thing as the guy who hacks your system in and looks at you like "what, who me? sign here" and bolts?
My rule is that if I am being charged an installation fee, I do not tip, regardless of the service.
If there is no install fee, I will actually tip as long as the installer is in the time window, is friendly, and completes my work properly.
I had a Comcast guy come the other day for an internet install and he was nice, but I was also paying an installation fee they would not waive, so I did not tip.
My pizza delivery guys get lower tips now, because they shaft me with a $3 dollar delivery charge. I used to tip $5, now I tip $2.

I don't tip very often.
I tip the server at the restaurant, tip the pizza delivery guy, tip the person that cuts my hair. I don't tip the mailman or garbage pickup guy at Christmas time like some people do. I didn't give the roofers a tip, I paid the company they work for plenty of money. I don't leave money in the tip basket at a casino when I cash in my bucket of quarters, or a pay slip from the slot machine. I don't tip the paper delivery person that brings the newspaper once a week. I don't tip the people at the carwash that hand dry the outside of the car. Where would that end ? Tip the 4 people drying the car, tip the person that vacuumed it out, tip the guy that pre-rinsed it off ?
Actually No, when the guy came to install my MRV I unhooked the old receivers and marked the wires for him, I moved my 22 from the living room to the bedroom and I dug the ditch to bury the wires, so that's wrong to say on your part.

Your point is moot......I don't believe you have the intellect to say what people should and should not be making....If you're a waitress, I don't have to tip you, you took that job hoping for tips...I don't expect a tip when I install anything because yes, I am getting paid...Just your thought pattern is way beyond anything, o.k. to tip people who take jobs paying below minimum wage, but don't tip a professional who took a job paying better than minimum wage... If you don't want to tip a man, don't, but don't try to convince other people you are correct with that thinking...

It takes all kinds. Many years ago, I leased the Shell station in Mammoth Lakes CA, a ski resort. I parked the tow truck at my nearby home at night. One cold night a guy banged on my door saying he desperately needed gas because he had an emergency at home in Los Angeles. I agreed to walk over and open up. As I started pumping, he told me to stop at 5 gallons because he could get it cheaper in the next town. No tip either.
I wouldn't expect a tip in that case, and I wouldn't have stopped pumping at $5 either.
