Any way to disable them?

The most common is the one that keeps nagging you every time you want to do something like copy a file or during an install Are you sure you want to do this? popup. Need your permission to proceed popup. Tonight my wife started complaining that none of her e-mails went out. ( Outlook 2007 for Vista) I checked and sure enough tons of e-mails she tried to send the last two days were stuck in the outbox. What I discovered is another popup that asked the question Are you sure you want to send this e-mail. She didn't notice its momentary popup in the lower right corner. WTF is all this paranoia Microsoft has built in Vista for?
I need one setting to shut off all the harassment.

Even sharing a hard drive so my other computers can see them requires thousands of permissions with silly check boxes in a grid that I needed to go through one at a time and it still doesn't work to allow my drive to be access from another machine, and I'm getting really annoyed by it.

I would go for Internet search, not posting at DBS site.

Start->Settings->Control Panel
Switch to classic view. User Accounts.
Turn User Account Control on or off.

Will get a security alert about this every time you boot. But the popups will be gone.

This might not fix the e-mail problem. Have never seen that.

I think the e-mail popup had to do with sending e-mail with attachments. Seems all the e-mails were a huge distribution of some xls file she was sending.



Just tested it and it worked! Thanks much.

The only downside is it now pops up a bubble that my computer is at risk. LOL! I'll have to let my wife know how to interpret that screen.

BTW- it also fixed the sending e-mail with attachments too so they now get sent without the nag screen.

You can turn off the Security Center Alerts bubble too.

Are you saying that turning off UAC affected your passwords? It should not have any effect on remembering passwords.

Anyone know the secret to getting Vista sharing turned on.

I have everything I can think of turned on and my C drive is said to be shared and the permissions set to Full access all boxes checked. I did this for each drive. What a frigging chore! Wish I had a simple global switch to just share the damn computer on my lan.

The result is I have every printer, every device and every drive letter visible on another computer now except that I get access denied, you don't have permission to access this network resource.

Obviously I still have some hidden switch still off for sharing the drive.

I have password access shut off but I tried it with it on and it doesn't work either way.

Is the workgroup name the same for all machines on your net?

Yeah, when I booted up this morning I had to log in to several sites... some everytime I went to a new page... turned it off and went back to normal...

Update on network access to Vista drives.

By following the guide in that link very carefully from the top, I was able to at least get main folders shared on other xp and vista computers on the lan, all on the same work group name BTW. It didn't work for the drive as a whole but at least the first level folders and all sub folders automatically. This is not a 100% solution but getting there.

Bitch session- One of the problems I have with these OS coders at Microsoft is that their mind set is to work to make the OS more complicated to use as oppose to the Apple OS coders who work to make things more easy and behind the scenes. The coders at Microsoft need to be taught a basic lesson in real life. The customers who buy their products use it to get results, not to make a project out of playing with the operating system. The solution to this nightmare they have created is code in a simple on off switch, so those of us who don't wish to play operating system pilot, can simply activate the file and printer sharing with one easy selection like we had in XP or the choice to custom build it like they now have with the dozens of switches and protocols.

Agree with all that, but considering that MS is forcing this down our throats by preventing XP from being marketed on new computers, we're stuck and need to deal with their gauntlet of games. Do you think they will ever offer an option to just check a box to allow sharing? Like in an SP2 release, or will they release this new version of Windows 7? where we will begin the driver nightmare all over again?

I do have a question for you, however. Is my searching for a way to turn on sharing for an entire hard drive a waste of time because it really doesn't exist? I got it now were I can set the sharing for all primary folders I create ( just not programs folders, or windows folders or anything windows creates) Or can it be done and I still have not set something properly for the drive? TIA

Don,
I was able to share the root of my Raid Drive (not c) by using the same Usernames & passwords(yes multiples are allowed but must match exactly) on all computers that are connected(or mapped) to this Drive. Then I had to find the check boxes you where talking about and check Full control for everyone. Since then I haven't had any problem with connecting to the drive just like it was a local drivce on any of the computers on my network.

You'll need to right-click the drive you're sharing, choose Properties, go to the Security tab, and permit Everyone access to this drive. This isn't recommended on the system drive, which is why the Sharing wizard doesn't do it automatically. When you share the non-system drive (D: ), it's not a security risk, so the Sharing wizard changes the file system permissions to match your share permissions.

Agree with all that, but considering that MS is forcing this down our throats by preventing XP from being marketed on new computers, we're stuck and need to deal with their gauntlet of games.

My corporate account with Dell still allows me to select XP for any new machines I buy. Not everyone likes Dell though so I'm not sure what options HP, IBM, and Lenovo offer but they should have that option available still.

Mapping to the C$ share can also be enabled by creating a registry entry to overcome UAC controls.

Finally Success!

Figured out that the way to enable access to the entire hard drive was to set security users by adding "Guest" and then selecting it in the list and enabling Full control. Now when I see the drives in my other network computers I can access them without the annoying nag screens.
I know that I am not as secure but I don't need to protect myself from me nor my wife. We're the only two users here.
