I work in a mine so this hits home... unfortunantly they have found one Body....

fergie.

my cousin joe worked for 17 years at the beth energy mine at mariana, gigantic fire shut it down, joe came out and went back in to fight the fire.

he said the quecreek guys were alive and called it right, he just said these guys hit a methane vein and that panel is destroyed. the man who lives 1/2 mile from the ventilation shaft and 250 feet on top of the seam said he heard the blast, saw a fire ball by the shaft , and his house shook. that blast was massive.

say a prayer, as im sure we are all doing.

I saw on CNN where there were many many violations at that mine and 4 times the average deaths there than the other mines.

A little background on miners for folks that are watching the news... the 1 hour of Oxygen that each miner carries that they have been reporting is a device called a self rescuer. All miners are required to carry these on on their Miners belt. The Self rescuer is for escape purposes only and in a high concentration of Carbon Monoxide will last less than an hour(maybe only 30 minutes). It fits into your mouth and has clamps that seal your nose. ( The More the Carbon Monoxide the hotter the mouthpiece will get... )The Miners Belt typically has a pouch or a strap for your miners lamp battery the self rescuer and a tag with either a number or your SS#. Your lamp battery will typically also have your name and that number on it. Before you enter a mine you have another tag with the number on it that either you or a responsible person "tags you in" which shows that you are in the mine... when you leave the mine you "tag out". A mine lamp will typically last between 12 to 16 Hours depending on the condition of the battery etc... ( my lamp also runs a remote that runs a continuous miner so that drains it even more) the lamps are typically 4.5 volts. Edit... the Robot that they sent in (CNN Showed one) would be lucky to go very far once you get into the workings where I work at... ( too lightweight and mickeymouse built) it would be stuck very quickly...

They are showing where there were storms nearby on my local news and three lightening strikes near the mine site which could have caused the explosion.

I had just watched the news at 11 00 until 11 35 and they did not mention it then. They had breaking news on it after that. That's great news to those miners and those families. I flipped it over to my other tuner on my 522 and rewound it and got the news.

Something I have not heard the Reporters bring up... all mines (of a certain size) are required to have a Refuge Chamber which contains potable water and crackers and such and is supposed to be sealed from the mine atmosphere... also breathing apparatus that generates Oxygen(Drager, Chemox... chemically generate O2). Ours is near the shaft area and also has a line to the surface for clean air...

I will add some stuff... the typical miners belt besides having the Battery on one side, the self rescuer on the other... a Tag plus likely a knife of some sort and probably a pair of channel locks and sometimes a pair of dikes (wire cutters) probably weighs 20#'s.. add a hard hat with the cap lamp... I carry a small crescent wrench on my belt also... You are self contained, you have your lunch bucket and a water jug(for us we work 12 hour shifts so at least a 1 gallon water jug(ice is available)) I typically work 5 miles from the shaft and we go down 1650' from the top to the landing...It takes us at least 30 minutes to get to where we work on roads that typically would be considered on the surface off road... :)

Yikes! This is just as bad as the 2000 Election results, except this actually involved lives and the well being of their families. What a horrible mistake! I wonder who is to blame? In my opinion, reporters should refrain from reporting such information until they receive official confirmation. It's certainly not going to hurt any of us from having to wait another hour or so for accurate information.

Shame on those involved with spreading this misinformation.:down
