The return of TiVo to DIRECTV

Yes, I realize that this is certainly just rumor material at the moment.

That said, I actually think that this will happen. D*'s recent announcements regarding ongoing support for the TiVo platform and this blog entry are certainly encouraging.

Maybe this will be the key feature in the HR21. It would make sense to me. Why else would D* be updating the fairly new HR20? Just to make a model without an OTA tuner? Doesn't make sense to me.

I was kinda figuring that the TiVo update was to reduce the churn numbers for a smaller portion of subscribers that would rather quit than give up their TiVos. Would be cool to see more than just this update... but if it took this long to bring the D* TiVos up to about half of what a standalone can do, how long will it take to introduce brand new MPEG4 ones?

I stated publicaly on DBSTalk, and I'll do it here. If D* releases an MPEG4 HD TIVO, I'll take my POS HR-20, that can't scan for OTA, can't switch between tuners, can't hold a pause point for any reason if you go anywhere but the show currently on the screen, that HR20, bring it to my local shooting range, and put mulitple 44 caliber bullets in it, and then mail it back to D*. I'll PAY for it just to be rid of the POS. Every day that goes by I loathe it more.

We've got the best service in the satellite world with the crappiest DVR in existance.

Oh, I almost forgot, but they tell me I'll have VOD soon, kinda VOD, I guess, I don't intend to run ANOTHER wire to my entertainment center through two walls from my internet connection, THEN wait for content to download, then watch it. No internet, no VOD. What a load. !protest

Ummm, the HR20 is the 2nd best dvr out there behind the 622 IMHO and Ive had the moto and scie atl cable boxes. Tivo has its flaws too.

If you think the HR20 has issues now, you should have owned it the first month it came out (last sept) like I did. It had major issues.

You certainly don't need a hard-wired ethernet connection for VOD.

I have it working fine using wireless-G.

Yes, it takes a while for the selected show to download, but unlike the Tivo downloads from amazon.com, the download does not need to complete before you can start watching it.

Thank you. That fact seems to escape TiVo FaNBoIs, who like to use the term flawless a lot. My HR10 seems to reboot almost nightly, it's on a UPS, so I have to reprogram the 30 sec. skip. I don't have to do that with the HR20 or my MCE 2005.

I've used TiVos of various flavors for almost 7 years, but after trying other platforms, I'm no longer that impressed by some of the choices TiVo makes, like no ability to view the Guide/Menus while watching recorded shows, no Free Space Indicator, and the fact that TiVo seems way too interested in what I like to watch. If I knew that info was being used to determine TV ratings, I'd be fine with it, but it's just being used for TiVo's own purposes.

All I know is, when I'm using the other DVRs, TiVo seems a bit too dated, too cartoony, and bit oVerraTed to me.

Why dont you read the countless cable card threads about how well the S3 is doing.

Then, lets not forget that SDV is going to kill the S3. Tivo will end up being sega, they will market their software because thats all theyll have left.

Now if I could have a MOTO box thru comcast for $15 a month with tivo software vs the HR20 for $6, Ill take the HR20.

Has everyone forgotten how well the HR10-250 worked with tivo software, can you say piece of ****. I know, I gladly gave one up for the HR20.

Were you using the latest firmware with the HR10-250? I agree that the slowness before the 6.3 firmware upgrade was terrible, but I have been very pleased with it since then.

Nope. I dumped it before that. Problem with the whole issue, its nice they fixed it but that was a looooong time coming and many were unhappy last summer and ready for the HR20.

622 is my fav out of those. I do like the software, but I feel the HR20 and 622 units are darn good. If we had tivo software, im sure there are things others would be unhappy with.

The HR20 has come along way and Im sure theyll cont to make it better. Plus its 1/3 the cost of what tivo is getting for their software. Im sure if tivo comes back to D* full time, we'll be paying more for our dvr's.

Most of those were used at the same time as others so I was able to compare. Yes, some of the older Tivo units were slow and even the 250 was till a recent update but (again, in my opinion) there is not a better DVR than Tivo. The interface, functionality, etc are all better. I would put the 622 next, the HR20 is a way down that list though (I actually really liked the Ultimate TV boxes back in the day!). DTV would be very well served going back to the Tivo software, thats not to say there haven't been improvements in the HR20's, but I don't think it'll ever touch a Tivo unit.

That seems a bit high. People might pay that much for one with Lifetime on eBay, but most retailers have it for ~ $600. If you're factoring in the cost of service, then you should do the same for the other DVRs as well.

There is a more economically priced model for $299 out now and there's talk of a USB device to handle SDV, but I will agree that $13-$17/mo. for DVR service is out of whack.

I had 2 TiVos with Lifetime, a Series 1 and 2, and I put them head-to-head with the MCE 2005. I used all of them for OTA and I wanted to know if I should I should go with the S3 prior to the analog cut-off. In the end, I found the MCE 2005 capable of doing more and more to my liking. The fact that I only had to shell out for a PCI ATSC tuner as opposed to ~ $800 for a S3 and Lifetime transfer cinched it. The TiVos are out the door and in all honesty, I don't miss them.

As far the HR20, there are things it does that TiVo doesn't and vice versa. All I know is, when I'm using the HR10, there are more things I miss that the HR20 does than vice versa.

Yeah, I think that price might be a bit high but I totally agree with what you are saying. When DTV or Comcast "subsidizes" the service its cheaper and better for everyone.

Who's to say thatthe NEW TIVO, if it ever does become reality, will have ANY of the FEATURES your looking for, no one said the TIVO would be a copy of the OLD TIVO with MPEG 4 capabilities.

I hope it doesn't happen as I don't want to pay any more addl. money just to have it work, I can see the TIVO coming back and wanting 10 -12 dollars a month per sub for thier software,I won't pay it, $ 6 bucks is plenty for the DVR just to work. Fortunatly D* decided to incorperate all theDVR's intro on payment, that was a good thing for them in the long run.
TIVO was $12 p/m on it's own, just for a stinkin guide that I could get off the D* screen ....
