Did Allen Media pull the plug on the Grio? As of this morning, the Grio is showing up as unavailable on Allen Media's WAAY out of Huntsville. I know they had layoffs back in August. Another forum mentioned that Sinclair stations made an agreement to switch from the Grio to TBD this month.

No, Allen Media Group has not "pulled the plug" on The Grio, but they did recently implement significant layoffs within the Grio team, including the managing editor and members of the video and podcast team, as part of "strategic changes" to reposition the company for growth across all divisions, including The Grio; essentially making significant cuts to the platform while still maintaining its operation.

Key points about the situation:
  • Layoffs occurred:
Allen Media Group, which owns The Grio, recently laid off staff members from the platform, including the managing editor and parts of the video and podcast team.

  • Reason cited:
The company stated these cuts were part of "strategic changes" to improve the company's position for future growth.

  • The Grio still exists:
Despite the layoffs, The Grio remains operational and is still accessible to viewers.

Here in Chicago, TheGrio is no longer on our channel, and it has already been announced that TBD is going to be taking it's spot later this month.

No big loss.
The channel it broadcasted on my affiliate station was originally This TV before it changed over last year. This TV was pretty awesome back when MGM owned it. It was run down after Allen Media bought it. The guy has a handful of good shows, but he can't seem to run an entire network channel successfully.

I know this is OTA and not Dish, but Dish still has The Grio on channel 360, so the channel hasn't been fully shut down. At least not yet.

The OTA channel and satellite/cable channel have different programming on it. 90% of the cable/satellite version was not on OTA. The OTA stuff was Byron Allen's stuff since he owns the station.

additional note...Byron Allen bought the bankrupt "Black News Channel" and merged together...thats why cable/satellite has different programming. The cable/satellite slot was the old BNC

That AI generated answer is wrong. Grio's OTA feed that replaced TheLight back in 2021 was discontinued today.

The cable/sat feed that replaced Black News Channel that now mostly shows sitcoms and its streaming FAST feed still exists

As for TBD, that deal is only for the FOX O&Os in NYC, LA, Chicago, Atlanta and Phoenix. Something else will be replacing it in the rest of the FOX O&O markets.
