Tech Chat Recap 11-10-08

you will be able to watch one satellite program and record another or record an OTA program...

This is a mistake right? The 211 has only 1 sat tuner so what they mean is you can watch a recorded show and record another.

Big thumbs up on this Tech Chat :up:up

Sorting and folders for the EHD was #1 on my list. Fixing Seagate Freeagent problems was #2. Sounds like both will be addressed in a few weeks.

The learning remote will also really come in handy.

How it could be true, if rad compare prices for leased HRxx and OWNED ViPxxx ?!

i have never leased from dish. i own my 622 and 211. D doesn't give you the option to own anymore as far as i know. sorry p.smith i forgot about the lease price for E*

I wasn't able to watch but from the posts here I suppose nobody asked about the future possibility of mutiple EHD's via a USB hub. Did I miss any info on this?

If I remember right they said do not connect more than one EHDD, yet... just like that, would have to go back and listen to again but I believe that is what I heard...

Okay, so what's the best deal on a compatible USB HDD to use with the ViP211 as a DVR? I would think that about 250 GB would be more than enough storage for the infrequent and/or casual user. Any recommended HDDs for this upgrade?

If you do not have a Dvr currently, I wouldn't start off with less than a 500Gig drive...(you would be surprised how fast a 320 gig will fill up)they recommended a WD drive that even has a Dish Dvr Approved sticker on it and said it was available at sears...I have good luck with Seagate / Maxtor drives for my 622 but I swap them out all the time... I have a 500 Gig Seagate eSata drive that has been working as my Directv Dvr drive 24/7 for several months with no problems...as far as deals... I have bought most of mine locally at Wal Mart (thats all we have here) I have ordered a couple from Amazon...(the eSata)

During the chat, they specifically recommended two brands of external hard drives: Seagate and Western Digital. They showed a picture of a Western Digital EHD branded as "My DVR" (I think), with the Dish logo.

I have two of the Seagate drives at home and I love 'em. They have been rock solid, and come with a 5 year warranty (compared to 1 year or even 90 days).

As for the complaint about Seagate drives power-savings modes, that's easy to fix: Before you hook the drive up to your Dish receiver, hook it up to a PC and run the Seagate software to disable power savings. (While you're at it, you can turn off the light too.) Or, wait for the Dish fix expected in the next few weeks.

Yea, but the MSRP for the 722K is $300 more then the HR21/22/23:

ViP 722K DVR MSRP:

-- $499 with OTA Module

-- $470 without OTA Module

It will be interesting to see what the price is folks really end up paying for it.

MSRP for a HR21/22/23 that you do not own but have to return when you are done with it (lease)?

$29 to lease the module or to own it? Why would you want to own a module in a leased receiver? If it is a lease upgrade fee then I bet the cost to own it would be more.

Did they mention whether or not they will fix the external HD "bug"/feature where it takes you back to the top of the list every time you exit a program. If you are searching through let's say a bunch of Spongebob recordings it takes me back up the the top of the list instead of leaving me where I was. Real annoying..... Take forever to scroll back down to "S"

I would really like to see this feature.

Cost to buy was $29 more when buying both receiver and module. I have no idea if there will be a difference in lease fees. I would guess no difference in lease fee with or without.

Before I run out and buy an EHD, would like opinions on compatible drives. Looking for one that is both quiet and has large capacity.

It was the first Higgins report that I was actually able to sit through to the end.

The "click to setup a DVR timer for the show being advertised" is a great idea. Helps both the customer and the programmers.

It does but I sure hope that TIVO doesn't have some vaguely worded patent related to this 'technology'. The only thing about the TIVO technology was that very few shows used it so it rarely ever actually was a functioning 'feature.'

I've read this whole thread. Did we ever say FOR SURE that there will be no monthly DVR fee if we convert the 211 to a DVR. I know there will be the one time 40 dollar fee, but what about the 5.98 monthly fee?
