TCM on Demand -- Dish is asleep again

Has anyone noticed TCM has a new video on demand website, http://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/movies. They also have a very good Android, iPad, and Kindle Fire app for free. You log-on using your Dish name and password.

You choose from about 50 movies that change every week and watch them on your PC or tablet or Iphone.

It works great. You can also watch the Eastern and Western live feeds on your computer or Iphone

The only problem is you can't stream any of these 50 movies onto your television! Dish doesn't have a VOD channel for TCM, so you get zero.

It would be nice if Dish would wake up and give us TCM on demand, so I don't have to go upstairs to watch it on my desktop computer or Kindle Fire tablet. Shouldn't we be able to watch it on our tvs as well, we are paying for it in our subscription package.

Well first off, thanks for exposing this to me. I had no idea this was even available! And it is available to Dish subscribers, which is also awesome. So a number of movies a month and a live stream?! W00t!

Your issue with it not being on Demand via the receiver, you can connect your Kindle to the Television as a work around.

You shouldn't be giving Dish total blame when you see something along these lines. If the provider doesn't allow Dish to stream the content through the receivers or DishAnywhere then Dish cannot do it. If the provider does allow it and Dish doesn't supply them then you can criticize Dish. Since we do not know what the deal is, there is no way of knowing who is not allowing it. Having access to the app should be good enough for everyone.

Knowing how Dish operates, I am almost positive it is a Dish mistake. TCM isn't going to make it available to all Dish customers and not let Dish show them to its customers. DirecTV has had a TCM on-demand channel for several years now.

Regarding it being "good enough" without a TCM VOD channel on Dish, most people want the option of watching movies on their large-screen TV.

I could careless about TCM. One reason is "turner CLASSIC Movies" is pointless for on demand streaming on the reciever. Id prefer newer movies, and shows, on the hard drive for free, rather than some oldies. Besides, how many of the stuff on TCM come also on other channels that have ondemand. Such as encore, and amc. Helps keep the bill down, and do not really lose any services.

Simple solution: Don't watch it.

I don't. Because dish has decide to make better use of the hard drive space and thankfully didn't have to pay higher fees to TCM to get it. See. Makes it a winner.

See you just pointed out people have different preferences. Personally I think the majority of newer movies are crap.

Normally they don't get access to the On Demand content until there is a new contract in place for that channel.

Once that contract is in place then they get access to the content but it must be re encoded / converted so that it works with a format that is viewable by DISH receivers. DISH uses variable bit rate so each program must be encoded in many formats so that it works and looks best based on the customers home internet connection.

A lot of people think that they (DISH) gets VOD content and they can just plug it in and have it be available, but there is a lot of work that goes on before you see it.

Wink all you want, that is how I have my HT set up.

They can do this with the Kindle to begin with and just need the HDMI cable for the Fire.

I've had a pc connected to one of my tv's for at least 8 years now. Hell, I even use my HTPC as a 3-tuner OTA dvr (with a 3tb hdd).

Not a bad idea, but I am paying Dish $100 a month so I don't have to go out and buy a new PC and wireless keyboard. I also checked Roku, which I have, and it is not available there either.

I'm not seeing your message appear, but I did get to read it in my email. It has everything to do with it. As pointed out, most the stuff you can find on TCM are on demand with other channels like encore. So for them to add an additional feature, it costs more money, which in return, they have to raise our bills, and you pay more. So to add an on demand channel that would only grab a small market and be beneficial to very few, you want to raise the bill, but somethig as useful as the local channels, you want to eliminate. Your reasoning makes no sense from a business standpoint

That's like saying ESPN is the exact same as Fox Sports 2

I don't want to sound mean here but I think of mitchflorida as the customer who wants Dish to carry everything but always complains about prices being too high. I'm fine with Dish adding more features and channels but I don't expect them to do it without some cost being passed on to us. Lets not be too unreasonable here and just say that Dish is dropping the ball because they don't have a network's VOD.

Who said anything about a new pc? A $100 special off of craigslist or a local computer shop with a $40 video card will do the job just fine. And you'll be able to stream other things besides TCM on demand (a whole lot of other things).
