Hello. I've emailed the following suggestions to Dish Network, but have yet to receive anything other than a cursory "thank you" in respone. I'd like to know what other customers think of these ideas. I suspect I'm not the only one who sees that the features I'm suggesting would be improvements!

Oh... I have the VIP722 HD receiver.

1. The Purchase History should be protected by the system lock/PIN, at least optionally. When guests visit, I don't necessarily want them to be able to see what PPV movies I've ordered. This is a significant privacy issue!

2. When viewing Themes/Movies, the list is always sorted by time, and movies that are being shown multiple times (or on multiple channels) can show up many times in the list. This tends to make this feature practically unusable, and is especially problematic for PPV movies, which appear in the list every half-hour, all day long. There should be an option to sort the movies alphabetically, and to group all upcoming showings of a particular movie in a folder, as is possible with the "My Recordings" list. It would also be helpful to be able to fliter the list by parameters in addition to genre and MPAA ratings, such as HD vs. non-HD, channel, language, PPV, closed-captioning, critics' ratings, and year. It would also be nice to filter by both MPAA rating and genre in one request. Also, when searching by MPAA rating or genre, I must either choose "All" or just one particular rating, like R, or one genre, like Adventure. If I'm interested in PG-13 or R, or in Adventure or Comedy, I must perform two separate searches. This is an unnecessary hassle.

To illustrate, suppose I'm interested in English-language PG-13 or R-rated Adventure or Comedy movies, in HD format, but not PPV or VOD. I'd expect to fill out a series of search forms as follows:

Code:
Theme

___ All Themes [ Select Genres/Ratings ]
_X_ Movies [ Keyword ]
___ Sports [ Options ]
....

(the items on the right are buttons that display the following optional screens)

-----------------------------------

Code:
Select Genres Select Ratings Select Years

___ All Genres ___ All Ratings _X_ All Years
___ Action ___ G ___ 2000-09
_X_ Adventure ___ PG ___ 1990-99
___ Animation _X_ PG-13 ___ 1980-89
___ Biography _X_ R ___ 1970-79
_X_ Comedy ___ NC-17 ___ 1960-69
... ... ...

(Each list should permit selection of more than one item. The "All" buttons could place a check mark on each of the other items, so one could select, say, "All Ratings" and then "G" -- turning "G" off -- to easily search for everything except G-rated movies.)

-------------------------------

Code:
Search Options

Sort by: ___ time _X_ title (grouped)
HD: _X_ only ___ exclude
PPV / VOD: ___ only _X_ exclude
Foreign: ___ only _X_ exclude
Premium channels: ___ only ___ exclude
Closed-captioned: ___ only

3. Although "My Recordings" can list episodes of the same show in a folder, deleting all the episodes is a cumbersome process; I must:

- select the folder,
- move to the Edit button and press Select,
- move to the button area, move to the Select All button, and press Select,
- move to the Delete button and press Select,
- move to the Yes button and press Select,
- move to the Done button and press Select,
- move again to the Done button and press Select.

That's a lot of button presses on the remote control (14, I think). Compare that to DirecTV's system, where I can move to the folder in question in the recordings list, press the "_" button on the remote twice, and then press Select to confirm that I want to delete the programs. Note, here, not just that this takes just 3 (three!!) button presses, but that "Yes" is the default whenever I ask their system to delete something. I find that preferable, since I'm confirming something I just requested. The receiver shouldn't assume I'm an idiot and made a mistake.

4. My Dish Network system is not the only TV system I encounter from day to day, and I find it difficult to remember the channel numbers assigned to my favorite channels. I could find things quicker in the Guide if there were an option to sort it alphabetically by channel name, since the various providers' numbering schemes differ and they all seem fairly arbitrary.

5. I also find it difficult to decipher some of the channel names, like HBOSG and EWAM. Wouldn't it be possible to show the full channel name somewhere when, for example, I've highlighted that channel in the Guide listing?

I doubt that I'm alone in desiring these enhancements. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks for listening.

1) Lock the remote in a cabinet when guests are in your home if you want extra privacy :D. How often do you have guests that you need that kind of privacy from that you invite into your house and leave unattended? You can delete the purchase history for when guests come over and you leave them free at your home.

2) Lock the channels you don't want showing up in the search. Better yet, use dish.sling.com to search for upcoming movies - it's 1000 times better than using the ViP722 method. You can do filters, HD, generes, and many other things. There's no comparison.

3) Same goes here for dish.sling.com for managing your recordings.

4) Work on memory skills for important channels, or quiz each other at dinner: What channel is CNN on Dish?

Thanks so much for the helpful suggestions.

So, you'd rather spend $$$ for additional hardware (Slingbox) than get usable Search and Delete-all-recorded-episodes features from the Dish hardware and service you're already paying for? I'm sure everyone else feels the same.

Can you imagine having a vacation home or ski cabin that you let friends and family use even when you're not there? Don't worry, you're not invited.

I can't tell if you are sincere or sarcastic.

There is no additional hardware needed, just internet access and the web-page. Since then, your online dish account has made this feature available.

If I had a vacation place and I was worried about the history, I'd just delete it. Why leave it on there if there is a concern?

Actually, I hadn't seen the online access feature yet. It is pretty nice, although I still can't find a way to easily delete the 35 Perry Mason episodes my daughter recorded. The only time I see a Delete button is when I'm looking at an individual recording.

Speaking of Delete, deleting the purchase history would be fine with me; I just have never seen a Delete option for that.

If all in one folder:
In DVR-DVR recording listing, open the Mason folder, push Edit, push Select All, push Delete, push yes.
Done,
-Ken

Hi, Ken.
Yes, I know it can be done with the DVR, but as I pointed out in my first post, it requires about 14 button presses on the remote. Compare that to DirecTV's system, where you don't even have to enter the folder in question: you can just highlight the folder in the top-level listing of recorded shows, press the "_" button twice, and respond to the "Are you sure?" prompt (just one more button-press, since "Yes" is the default). The same method can be used to delete an individual episode, either while in a folder or at the top level.

As I attempted to point out, the Slignbox web access to my DVR's recordings doesn't even show a Delete option until I'm viewing the entry for a particular episode. Am I the only one who thinks that's crazy?

Press the underscore button ? That sounds like a 'secret' feature that 99% of users don't know about. Is that keypress documented in the receiver's manual ?

I've always wanted that. I also used to have DirecTV, so that's where I've seen it and liked it. I mean, pretend one didn't have internet and a way to look this up (I guess the channel lineup card would be the best bet here). What is channel 197, DOC ? What about ch 230, ICTV ? Or ch 113, FLN ? I don't need people to tell me what those channels are, of course, but tell me how one would find this out otherwise ?

FWIW, the 922 has "new" EPG and does have more "network" information. As I recall, though it was a *mock-up*, they actually used the channels "logo".

Sounds like something my 2 year-old could easily do and leave me with no recordings on my DVR after only a couple minutes with the remote. I'm glad it takes a bit more work to delete something, at least I still have it when I need it. :)

Look around more on dish.sling.com

Go to the "My DVR" section and click on "Manage Disk Space". Like I said, you'll appreciate it much more than the receiver and maybe even as much as you like the D* method. I'd rather click with my mouse to clean up my DVR then with my remote. You can clean your whole DVR with 3 mouse clicks if you want (and you don't have to enter the folder(s) in question.)

Let us know if you can get rid of those Perry Mason episodes just as easily now, and at the same time those 24 Matlock episodes that she recorded as well (or you can mix and match - 25 Perry Mason episodes and 10 Matlock episodes in one deletion).

Heck, you can even delete every show you've already watched with 2 mouse clicks and leave the ones you haven't watched. I just learned that tonight.

That's some great info. Thanks.:up

Locking high number channels does not work well at all. Locking a high number channel keeps it out of the results list but then the map down channel shows up as a locked program when trying to manage conflicts.
