Starting yesterday, when I access pages at Bostonherald.com , they get dominated by giant Staples.com banners that expand to cover more than half of the page. That happens regardless of which browser I access them through: AOL 9.7, IE10, or Mozilla.

FWIW, I logged onto the internet through a Staples store's unsecured wifi-portal Monday night when I was parked in front of their store after hours. I have used Staples unsecured internet portal many times over the last couple of years. I am sure that to log on or otherwise connect, I had to click the APPROVE button on the bottom of their Terms of Service" page.

Did I let something into my computer, or is it just a coincidence that the Boston Herald pages are now cluttered with Staples banners and ads? My control panel does not list any programs added since last week, so I found nothing to delete. If Staples has invaded my computer, I suppose I could execute a system restore to a date before I saw this happening.

I can't answer your question directly but I would recommend the ad block plus add on for firefox. Install that and see what happens. Avast antivirus (free) now includes a browser cleanup tool. I haven't tried it yet but it sounds promising for your situation.

Yes, I'm pretty sure you let a little adware in to your computer when you approved the terms. There may have been an "opt out" check mark somewhere that you didn't uncheck. So now you have to get avast, adware or some such adware removal tool. Before you do that, look at your add-ons in your browsers and see if there is something obvious you can disable first.

Good luck.

Windows 8.1 seems to have broke almost all remote desktop apps
