I have read a few posts which stated that the size of the spotbeams for the new DIRECTV 10 satellite will be smaller than for the existing satellites. Is that correct - a function of the improved technology of the newer satellites, related to the Ka vs Ku broadcast frequency, or just a decision of Direct management?

The tighter / smaller they make the beams the more areas they can cover using single transponders, which is one of their most limited assets.

I think the providers feel they cover the area needed, anything outside that isn't necessary. The beams will be just wide enough to make sure the necessary area is covered.

I'm sure they break in into dollars somehow.
