if i purchase a dvr (used)like the 625, do i need the yellow card or a smart card, i do not have premium channels? or can i use the card from my old unit?

The new unit should come with it's own card, some models have them built in (I think the 625 is one of the units with a built in card). The card from your old unit has to stay with your old unit. You only have to worry about the card is if you get a receiver that does not have one in which case Dish will replace it (at a small fee to you).
