Some idiot from San Antonio named Patrick Greene wants to sue the Red Wings and the NHL because he doesn't like the Octopus tradition.

What. An. Idiot.

He has a letter he sent to the Red Wings- here's what he said:

As a citizen of the United States, I consider the octopus tradition as a
sign of degenerate minds. It is disgusting and turns my stomache.
The natural environment of the octopus is the ocean. The reason for
its capture by fishermen is for human consumption only, not human
playtime. To use the body of an octopus in such a manner is to devalue
the animal kingdom. If the National Hockey League's policy was to win
only 4 games, would fans toss the bodies of dogs and cats on the ice,
since they only have four legs?
An animal is an animal. Noone owns the ocean. Noone owns the octopus.
It is every persons responsibility to protect animals who are being shown extreme disrespect.
It is my intention, if the Animal Control Division fails to send
me a written promise to begin voluntarily to vigorously enforce the
Detroit City Code, to file a lawsuit against them. My intention is to
have a court issue an order to force the Animal Control Division to do
its job.
If I do not receive a response to this letter by Friday June 6, 2008, via my e-mail address of:

I will file the lawsuit, against the Animal Control Division
And the Detroit Red Wings, for their complicity in this crime.

Laff, that's awesome, I love it when people have nothing better to do in their own town so they go to others to make everyone better. I'm sure San Antonio could use someone like Patrick Greene to help around the city, cleaning up and forcing his ideals on everyone.

Not because I'm a Wings fan, but the Octopus in Det is simply part of the game now. Like the handshake in the playoffs, the cutting of the net in NCAA finals, the Lions being the whipping boy of the NFL etc. It's a simple act and relatively easy clean up. I hate the copycats like Florida with the toy rats (that just slowed the whole game down and I'm glad the NHL stopped that) and was it Nashville this year that had catfish on the ice? Cmon, I know immitation is considered the highest form of flattery, but the octopus and Red Wings and Hockey are just part of the tradition.

well, Samcdbs, I do believe animals have rights to the extent that we should beat the hell out of them just cause we had a bad day, but to to put lightly and to try to avoid the PIT, I believe a book had it written that man was given dominion over the earth and the animals and no that doesn't man to go crazy, but to use and take care in ways we see fit...

And of course since He is omniscient, he knew we would use the octopii at Red Wings games and it was good. We all know He has the winged wheel display proudly.

Actually I thought it was a violation of NHL rules to throw octopi or squid on the ice. Not an animal rights thing. More that the darned things are hard to clean off the ice. Not that I would expect taht to stop the fans in detroit.

BTW it helps to boil the octopus for about 20 minutes first and NEVER throwa frozen octopus out there. Live ones would be messy too (and that would bea mite cruel) but i don't think that they would survive out of water long enough to mange that.

I believe they are already boiled, or you are told to boil them ahead of time.
The actually give you directions and discresion as to size and location of your seat so that they ALL make it to the ice and not on another fan at the game.

Did this dingbat ever consider that they are not hurting the animal seeing it is DEAD already ???

The NHL made a point to bring a stop to it .....
as for clean up from the ice, probably not a big deal with a shovel.
