KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. - Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday morning after complications from his breakdown at the Preakness last May.

"We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain," co-owner Roy Jackson said. "It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time."

this is so sad. he was such a fighter, against almost impossible odds. we can all take a lesson from this very brave soul!!!!!

Not to diminish Barbaro's "courage", but the fact that he was kept alive from the getgo under the circumstances is really what's exceptional. I don't think that's necessarily a testament to his unique ability or stamina. With enough money a horse with almost any such injury could be kept alive and perhaps even make a decent recovery to some semblance of his former condition and abilities. It's just that in most cases the owners exercise the "humane" option. I'll bet someday some survivors might even race again - it's only a matter of time - and considerable $$...!

(Note to self: Google whether or not a horse has a soul...!)

after surgery, the vet in charge kept saying barbaro had a 50-50 chance of making it. they knew he would never race again......they were hoping maybe he could, at least, make future barbaros.

i think the owners stayed true to their word.....that once the horse started suffering, they would have him put down. it sounds like he had a very bad night. and there was no reason to let him continue suffering.

but even with the odds heavily against him, he kept fighting for survival. whether or not, a horse technically has a soul, you have to admire him. he had the heart of a true champion.

Are you people joking around, It's a horse, well now will probably be dog food.

But It's only a horse, IMO you should be protesting against these races who uses 2 year old horse who's bones aren't developed enough yet for the strenuous work that's put on there bodies.

Who will make it to the HALL of FAME this year?

What will the outcome of Super Bowl XLI be?
