So they came up with the most sophisticated pay-for-play program of all time. For instance, I had this conversation with a big-time SMU booster one time. "You'll never figure it out," he said.

He was not bragging. He believed that every school was cheating — who can argue? - and that his school had a foolproof system.

He told me SMU boosters were opening annuities for star players and throwing gobs of money into the accounts. Players could write checks out of the accounts, and eventually their NFL money would go in there, too.

"Untraceable," he said.

But please don't compare what happened at Miami to what happened at SMU. SMU got the death penalty because it was placed on probation five times in a 13-year period, because even after getting caught, it kept paying players. And everyone was involved. Coaches. Adminis-trators. Boosters. Politicians.

There have been other dirty programs since SMU got the death penalty in 1987, and there'll be plenty more. But there hasn't been another like SMU.

Miami can't begin to cheat the way SMU cheated.

SUM was huge. I recommend watching 30 for 30's "Pony Excess." That was something else.

THIS gives me some REAL hope....THANK YOU very much Will! There is no way we come out unscathed... but much better than the death penalty.

Miami is not going to get the "death penalty", not only that they don't deserve it. I know that the NCAA has to punish them, but at what expense? I can see those who are involved that are still there being removed and players not being eligible. To me Donna Shalala and Paul Dee need to be out of their jobs, now, with no pension.

As I much as I want her gone because in one hand, she wanted "shaddy characters away from the program", the other hand was extended waiting for a check. In the long run, ALL a university president is a glorified fund raiser...that's it....and in the end, and this is NOT an endorsement...all she was doing was her job....raising funds.

She is doing everything a president of all universities are doing.

College athletics now has become MORE dirtier than when the MAFIA was involved in horse racing....

True. I don't think you will find the governor of Florida involved as you did with SMU?

But you WILL find every politician south of West Palm Beach involved for sure and they all carry heavy weight(literally and figuratively) in Tallahassee.
