Got this in my inbox this morning.

Improvements to the signal strength meter on the Point Dish screen will be available for 322 receiver models beginning 6/5/07 through a software upgrade. All transponder readings have been recalibrated for consistency so that loss of video will occur around 10 points. Please refer to the attached TIB and/or completed training from the week of 5/28/07 for further information on this subject. Future software upgrades to other receivers that change the signal meter will be announced in the future.

The tech informed me of this today when I said I was having signal strength in the low 50s on my 625. (Had another problem too, but that's in another thread.) He said that the changes in the signal meter had already occurred.

However after looking at Scott's pdf file... I have the old signal meter... no wonder I'm having problems. LOL!

this is bs man, its gone be much harder to trouble shoot.

In the short term. But, consistancy across receivers would be a good idea. They'll get some calls, but I'd guess most people rarely look at the signal meters.

I haven't looked in months, and the uninformed probably doesn't know it exists.

I stated it in the other post and Ill state it again. They are going to get some irritated people on installs. I already thought the low SS on 129 and 110 with the 1000.2 was BS, now when they lower it new installs are gonna look at it and say "WTF". I mean 60's and 70's, come on. Especially anyone thats switching from D*(like I was), the 5lnb gets very high SS's.

I don't think it matters much as long as we know what the SS range is. What does it matter if the top signal range is 50 or 500 as long as we know what normal is. It will be a pain during the transition, but will nice once all the receivers are updated.

That's gonna be the big thing is figuring out what is "normal" when the update the software for all the boxes. Once you know the normal ranges, then it won't be too bad. Getting the public used to it though is gonna be another thing. More folks check their signal strength than you might think. Satellite TV is just now getting to be as common as cable had been for years. By this time most people are getting familiar enough with it to start messing with it on their own. As a consumer "in the know" it's not a big deal, but as a technician myself, I'm somewhat concerned at the perception of the general public. Time will tell.

As the years go by, I become more and more aware that people overestimate the intelligence of the average person.

I would be surpised if even 2% of Dish Network subscribers had ever looked at a Point Dish screen, maybe even less than 1%.

And there are probably 3 or 4 people who know what the signal strength numbers should be, and are also not members of some DBS Forum or another.

So, the number of people who say "it used to be 80 and now it is 40 !" without already knowing about the new meters is going to be very small.

PS There may be a certain number of DIY guys who look at the signal strength meter on the day of install, but they never look at it again after that.

Some do check sig strengths..I like having educated cutonmers but not on technical issues such as this..Customers who tamper or tinker with the EQ are a pain the ass..Not only can they screw the thing up they also want to blame someone else(the tech that comes to fix it after this interloper called dish to whine) and then they wan to tell you how to do your job. That followed by the 845 "why" and "what if" questions.......
ANyway....it'll take a litle gettiong used the new calibrations..Here's athe way I look at it..Everything is relative...So if a 60 on 119 tp 11 is poor, now it's a 20-30...Where's the problem?....By the same token if a 75 is very good on sat 118 tp 6, with the new cali, it's a 35 to 45....so what...
