I was thinking about this earlier and Im wondering if all channels should go full hd regardless of the provider. Channels that are entertainment ofcourse should go full hd aswell as educational channels but Im not so sure about news and sports and the like.

Are you kidding? All Sports channels should be HD for sure. News on the other hand I could care less about.

All HD premium channels would be nice. One thing I'd like to see alot more of is Dolby Digital audio. I go through the EPG just looking for the DD logo and I'll watch it even if I don't care about the movie.

Let me clarify,

Full HD as in non HDlite as is seen now on D and E for national channels that are entertainment and educational. This is what most people watch from my experience and what I see on the boards here is what most are looking for in hd. For these channels that are the mainstay they should be full HD.

HDlite would be fine for less popular channels and programming thats not a daily and hourly prime time viewing such as news, weather, and sports could go into hdlite since the first two are marginal viewing and not entertainment unless your into the pain and suffering of others for news and a science nut for weather, sports well thats for those guys who like watching sweaty men in spandex clothing chase each other to get at the ball one is carrying and eventualy end up in a big man pile but hey to each his own perversion:D

Cutting some hd channels down to hdlite would free up some bandwith I would think to allocate it for channels that are mainstay programming and bring in the money on a consistant basis and maybe toss a bone to the sports crowd for the big events like the superbowl and world series in full hd.

Well since you put it that way maybe I should reconsider.

I'm not a sports guy either but I'm sure glad that You won't be the one that chooses what goes HD. As more nets go HD they should be added. As the new birds go on line in MPEG 4 hope that all will be in full HD.

I think everyone should step 5 years into the future like I have where we laugh at what y'all consider full HD today.

Give it time.

More Hd sets are sold because of sports programming than any other content. You've got almost 4000 posts, are the others as silly as the 2 you have so far in this thread?

All channels will be in HD in the future I am sure. I am also sure Dish will only offer HD receivers to anyone SD or HD from Feb 09 onward due to the digital OTA conversion.

You can hook up a SD set to a ViP series receiver and everything will go MPEG-4 so I can't think this won't be the case.

Won't it be funny that when our small children grow up and have kids themselves, one of the grand kids will go up to mom or dad and ask. "What is SDTV?" Lets not kid ourselves, this will happen.

The digital conversion has absolutely nothing to do with HD, HD receivers, or satellite. This comment makes no sense at all.

I think it makes plenty of sense. Only the HD receivers incorporate digital OTA tuners. With these receivers, you are all set for everything in store for the future. Again I must point out, these receivers can operate existing SD sets and are the only receivers that are MPEG-4 ready. Down the road, even the SD channels will be MPEG-4 so the HD capacity and quality can be greatly enhanced for those who want HD and SD people will be set for the MPEG-4 conversion when that happens.

BTW.. the last time I checked, we are all headed towards the future. As far as yesterday goes, forget about it. You can never go back.

Remember as well, I am not talking about tomorrow here, but I am talking about a few years from now and this will happen.

I'm not disagreeing that they will move to an all MPEG 4 system or ViP (and beyond) boxes, but using the digital conversion as the reason makes no sense. In fact there are non-ViP (non-MPEG 4) receivers that have digital OTA tuners as well (811, 381, 942). There are also plenty of people that don't care at all about OTA signals and I wouldn't be surprised to have an MPEG 4 box in the not so distant future that doesn't have an OTA tuner at all.

Never said I wanted to be the one to make the decision but instead have asked a legitimate question of people here about wether all channels should go full HD or should there be some that should go HDlite or be changeable by the provider from full HD to HDlite.

The numbers of hd sets sold is only valid in that it happens before the big events such as the superbowl and world series, go by the stores a day to a week later and you see a substantial portion of those sets being returned.

Wether all of my posts are silly or not is up to you and if you love sports thats fine, myself I could care less about the pass time for a whole host of reasons but thats another story.

Not true. All TVs and support devices shipped after March 1st must include digital tuners if they include a tuner at all. Not just televisions, but VCRs, DVDRs and DVRs.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if the TiVo S2 DT units really don't support OTA. It seems like they can't avoid supporting at least the VHF OTA channels. The FCC requires them to be marked in stores as ATSC incapable, but they continue to build and sell them.

Funny you should mention that, I noticed the other day that the vcr/dvd players I was looking at all mentioned a digital tuner built in.

Except for SD tivo's I've not seen any current product that wasn't either digital capable or tunerless. I saw a 5 inch ATSC portable TV at Best Buy the other day, I didn't expect to see that any time soon.

I think that any TV under 13 inches is actually exempt from the ATSC tuner requirement at present. It is interesting that you found a 5 incher that has a digital tuner in it. But, that was at Best Buy - bet you won't see that at Wal-Mart for a few more years.
