Setting up my 625

I got my new 625 yesterday. The first one i got (Sunday) had froze up and the DVR would go in and out (meaning it would work sometimes and then not). The tech came over tested my old box and saw that at the moment it was working fine. (I had to unplug it and re-plug it bank in in order for to happen) As the tech was getting ready to pack up he tried my box once more and then it froze and shut off. Seeing this he finally agreed to swap me a new one.

FINALLY!!

I get my new box and basically, he just plugged it in, activated it and left. The first guy went through the process of configuring it for me. This guy just left it. On my old box I could record two shows and watch a third. I tried that on this one and it wasn't happening. I lost two shows I wanted to watch because of it.

Also, on my old box, when i would DVR something, I would get a little box with a 2 symbol next to my show and it worked ou fine. I got that one my first show I tried to record, but on the second one, I got a box with a 1 symbol and it wouldn't let me watch a third show while the pther two were recording, I had to watch one of them.

So my question is: What settings do I need to make in order to be able to record two shows and whatch a third.

For reference, I am only using my 625 on ONE TV.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that you are in DUAL MODE. RECORD PLUS enabled tv2. When you timer record, select tv2. Live record tv2. If you desire to view a different source, and have activated record live on tv1 & tv2, you may select something that has already been recorded from the hard drive, but not something that is live. To do that requires a 3rd tuner that isn't a feature on the 625.

Jerry, maybe you should try READING the OP.

He said he is using the 625 on ONE TV.

He needs to be in SINGLE mode.

Right I have one TV.

I was able to record things and watch something else maybe it was one thing, but I think I had two things recording and watching something else.

So I don't know how I need to configure it. I tried to lay out my problem as best i could.

I think Jerry meant "single mode". Just switch your receiver into single mode and it should do what you want.

I have it on single mode, but I still get the different boxes and numbers in them when I try to record. I'm just trying to figure out if there are any settings in preferences that i should change, everything is pretty much on default.

Dual tuner receivers will not, and have never been able to Record 2 things, and let you watch something else (being currently broadcast) at the same time....

That is, unless you have an OTA antenna in your home, perhaps you were watching programming from your antenna while the box was recording two shows. I promise you, you were not recording 2 things from Dish, and watching a third Dish program at the same time before. You were either watching a previously recorded program, or your antenna.

Put your receiver in Single Mode to get the 1 and 2 numbers to go away when you hit the record button.

If you're seeing the 1 and 2 icons in the guide... that is how it works and you can't make those icons go away without cancelling the timers. They're just representing which tuner your receiver is going to use to record that show. Getting those icons to go away has no effect on the number of shows you can watch/record at the same time.

You can record 2 tuners AND watch 2 PRE RECORDED shows, if you like, all at the same time.

I think the OP should consider reading his owners manual.

No need to be snarky. I think I saw the first tech attach an OTA on my first box, so maybe that's what it was.

On this one, the guy didn't do that. I never said I wasn't mistaken.

I have to look on the back of my box and see what's going on back there.

The thing is when I went to record on my original box, I would hit record and the 2 would show on the first one and then I hit record for another show and it would give me another number 2. maybe they were at different times so it didn't matter.

Thanks for all of your input for those who responded.

Sorry, but no! There is no OTA tuner on a 625. Maybe it has passthrough, though... With the receiver off, you should be able to use your analog tuner to tune a 3rd live channel. Otherwise, it's two being recorded, and a 3rd pre-recorded to watch. That definitely works.

I believe that's how it works, yes.

This is my second box and it is doing the same thing as the first.

I am really getting pissed off at Dish. How am I paying for something that I can't even use!

I was recording two shows and I decided to watch a DVD on another channel on my TV because of company being over.

I'm thinking well, I have these two recording and then one more after those finish, I'll be ok after my company leaves.

Not to be. My DVR failed for the third time in 5 days on two separate 625! What the hell do I have to do in order to record a freaking show on this damn thing?

I had to unplug it and replug it back in, in order to get the DVR working again. This is like the fourth or fifth time I've had to do this and I just got it Sunday. I mean WTF!?

It will let me pause and rewind live TV when it's working, but don't try to record anything. Because this stupid thing will fail everytime. This box I just got yesterday and it failed already. I am not abusive to my equipment and I have it in my entertainment center with plenty of ventilation.

It even started recording something that I didn't even schedule to record.

This is turning out to be a terrible decision to get this damn thing.

I missed my show and they are not replaying it.

Thanks Dish, you said this was supposed to be so I wouldn't miss my favorite shows but now it's doing just that. Making me miss my shows.

A couple of things could be causing your issues. Some of these may not apply, but I thought I'd throw out a few possibilities to ease your frustration.

If you've been playing with the Mode switch and the Record plus settings since setting up those timers, you should really delete them and set them up again. The DVR can get flaky if these are changed too often (The manual, and I think, the screen where you change these settings says not to switch them often).
Where is your DVR physically located? If it's in a cabinet that can be closed it's very possible that it's overheating. Search the forums for threads about "Counters" Under the diagnostics screen to check High/Low/Avg Hard drive temps.
Make sure you let the receiver power down every night to get the latest program guide info, whithout an accurate guide it certainly can't schedule properly.
Good luck, I have had maybe only 1 or 2 shows that didn't record properly since getting my 625 almost 2 years ago. Same box, Same LNB, and my system is quite stable.

My 625 too is quite stable, and has been for over 2 years, and I'm definitely in dual mode with different things going on all the time on TV1 and TV2. I did notice a whole boatload of "Spongebob" recorded, when in fact Spongebob was not even on. I attribute that to EPG errors.

Did the two channels you were recording (while you turned your attention to other things) finish OK?

trubble combining antenna and tv out from 622 on one coalial feed
