Set up TV settings

I have a HD Receiver connected to a standard tv. The tv picture looks strange so what is the proper settings for a standard tv?

Certain channels (HD Channels) the people look stretched even though none of my setting are set on stretched.

I'm also confused what the format button does on the remote. If I change the format button setting to 480i resolution + Letterbox then it seems like all non HD channels are full screen and look normal and then when I change to a HD channel I get the letterbox picture with the people looking normal and not stretched. I'm assuming this is the setting I want?!?!?

FYI my receiver settings are set as:

Under system setup on the receiver

Under HDTV

then sub menu Video the Native setting is off, screen format is original format

Then under sub menu tv ratio the selected choice is Standard 4:3

Then under TV Resolution sub menu all boxes are checked

It might help if you switched from original format to letterbox. The 480i s/b only box checked. You shouln't need the format button if setup like this. It's just a suggestion to try.
