Scientific-Atlanta is hooking up with Tropos Networks to develop and promote Wi-Fi
products for cable operators seeking broad wireless reach. Under the deal announced
earlier this week, S-A and Tropos will collaborate on strand-mounting, coaxial powering
options and fiber converters for Tropos' line of 5210 MetroMesh indoor and outdoor routers
to optimize them for cable's HFC architecture.
S-A will also throw its sales might behind Tropos' Wi-Fi mesh topology, which is designed
to enable the delivery of city-wide fixed and mobile broadband connectivity for IP-based
voice, video and data services. The Tropos routers are now deployed in more than 200
large wireless networks in 25 countries around the world, none of them cable operations.
S-A said it's developing both hardened optical and coaxial backhaul solutions for cable
operators looking to enter the mobile wireless market. The company aims to have the
products available later this fall.
