I live in an apartment and have lived in a number of them in the past. The OTARD regulations finally gave us tenants some ammunition to fight back against the landlords and get our satellite TV, but I can understand their position as I drive around and see roughly 150 dishes in a 20 building complex. Especially as HD and international services require multiple dishes, it's getting ugly out there. There are also still people left out (like me in my current complex) who can't get satellite anyways since a decent view of the south just doesn't exist from my balcony.
Why isn't there more of a push for centralized dishes? I'd imagine if each building had a small array of larger dishes (let's say 24-36", I'm not asking for BUDs) and some way to feed those signals down to the appropriate receivers in a tenant's apartment we could cut down on the total number of dishes while also probably helping signal strength for those without great views and making it available to those without any view.
I know the inability of satellite to support dumb coax splitters is a real killer of an issue to deal with compared to cable TV for the same environment, but there has to be some solution that doesn't require everyone to get new hardware like DirecTV's MFH3 and at least allows a tenant to choose between the big two and whatever the local cable service is (or mix and match one port in if they want cable internet)
