I live in San Diego but have a Los Angeles service address to be able to get LA locals and more. Is there a way that I can use an OTA to be able to receive San Diego locals as well? Is this possible?

If you are in San Diego then the HD receiver should find the digital stations from S.D
Do a local channel scan for results.

A very smart way to max your affiliates! How far away are you from the SD transmitting towers? You will need a proper antenna.

Local scan

If I do a local channel scan, will I lose my Los Angeles channels? I am not plugged into a phone line.

What would be the proper antenna to buy and from where w/o losing my LA channels.

Thanks . . .

Also

Charper, how would I find out how far away I am from transmitting towers in San Diego?

Thanks again . . .

What is your San Diego zip code?

You want to keep the LA locals via the dish and pickup the SD locals via OTA, correct?

I know my LG & Zenith HD receivers both allow multiple zips to be entered and are consolidated into the EPG.

Thanks

Charper, you are big-time! Would you be able to walk me through what I need to do?

My zip is 92127.

Well you are only 15 mile away (both at 197deg) from the 2 DT channels listed for SD. So I would go buy a Zenith Silver Sensor locally to try out. Use this to scan your local 92127 OTA HD.

You forgot to ask if it was legal to lie about your address.

Local scan of channels

How do I do this and will I lose my L.A. channels?

Thanks for the help, Charper!

Thanks Charper

No, so I need to find out if my receiver will allow me to do that?

If so, am I just plugging the antenna into the back of my TV?

Thanks again . . .

YES

There will be 2 coax inputs on the satellite receiver: 1 for the satellite cable from the dish and one where you connect the OTA antenna for local HD reception.

If it were me (and mine supports 2 zip entries) I would keep the satellite delivered LIL for the area my service address states, say LA; and use the OTA antenna for physical HD locals, say SD.

What make & model receiver do you have and I can look at the user guide as well. Also, other users with that M&M can chime in to help.

Thanks again Charper

Charper, It doesn't have a brand name other than DIRECTV HD-DVR HR10-250. Is that what you need to know? My other DVR is a Samsung, but my HD-DVR does not have a brand name on it.

Charper, I also have SAT 1 in and SAT 2 in but also have an RF ant in. Is that where I would connect the Zenith Silver Sensor? Also, in reading my user guide, it says that "setting the secondary network area is optional. You should do this if you live very near another major T market city which broadcasts off-air channels your antenna can receive." This would make me believe that I can do what you are talking about. Thanks again and let me know if I am thinking this through correctly.

Yes to all.

Need more help - Herdfan and/or Charper

I went out and bought two indoor antennas. I couldn't find the Zenith Silver Sensor that was earlier recommended. However, I got a Jensen amplified HDTV antenna from Best Buy for $60 and a Terk HDTV indoor antenna from Circuit City for $40 to see which one would work better. Well, I tried both and both had signal strengths between 16-25, not enough to get it done. I don't know if it is the antenna or location of my house or what. As noted in above posts, I felt that I was close enough to at least receive some stations. The frustrating thing is that the local San Diego channels are even listed on the guide with programming details etc. just teasing me. However, I am getting no picture with a box at the bottom of the screen saying "Searching for signal on: Antenna In. See Message & Setup/Troubleshooting for Info". And I did all the troubleshooting tips to no avail. Where should I go from here? You guys have been a huge help, and I would love to get this done if possible. Thanks.
