Saints violate NFL Bounty rules, paid bonuses to injure players

I guess it was just a matter of time....

The Senate wants to grill the NFL about bounties. And the NBA, NHL, NCAA and Major League Baseball are invited, too.

Sen. Dick Durbin is setting up a Judiciary Committee hearing about bounties in professional football and other major sports in the wake of news that New Orleans Saints players received extra cash for hits that hurt particular opponents.

..though I HATE politics involved in professional sports... I DO agree with this statement he said...

"Let's be real basic about it here. If this activity were taking place off of a sporting field, away from a court, nobody would have a second thought (about whether it's wrong). 'You mean, someone paid you to go out and hurt someone?'" Durbin said in a telephone interview before raising the issue on the floor of the Senate.

"It goes way beyond the rules of any sporting contest, at least team contest, to intentionally inflict harm on another person for a financial reward," he said.

Congress should just let the courts,Justice Department,& the IRS handle this. The only reason that Oliver North's conviction was overturned & he didn't go to jail was because Congress gave him immunity from prosecution to say the things that should have made him "rot in prison." Congress & the Senate will only get in the way & "obstruct" justice if laws were indeed broken, just to put on a show.

I think he needs to clarify that statement, because that is what players are being payed to do both in football & hockey. Also under his statement, both boxing & Mixed Martial Arts should be banned.

I think PFT's brief attempt at heading off that kind of thought was pretty persuading:

We fully expect a wide assortment of comments articulating the notion that Congress has better things to do right now. But Congress routinely gets involved in matters that speak directly to the public interest. And given the prevalence and importance of sports in American society, this is a matter that strikes at the heart of the integrity of the games.

Throw in the fact that bounties encourage the intentional infliction of injury, and the failure of Congress to explore the situation would represent a failure of our government to protect its citizens.

From ESPN's Chris Mortensen:

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton will lose more than $5.8 million as a result of his suspension by the NFL, sources said Friday.

A league official says Payton's suspension ends after the Super Bowl, Feb. 3, 2013 in New Orleans.

That means his suspension, which begins April 1, will run just more than 10 months.

Payton's yearly salary, according to the sources, is $7 million.

Looks like Shockey is considering a lawsuit. Either for defamation or because he is the whistleblower and was outed by a league employee and for the involvement if the league-owned television network.

Should be interested because according to a couple of Tweets from PFT and the Miami Herald, Shockey is NOT the actual source of the info that lead to the Saints getting in trouble.

ESPN reporting that Sean Payton has approached Bill Parcells about interim head coaching role for the 2012 season...

imo this shouldn't be allowed to happen. the team is supposed to be under punishment. hire Rich Kotite. that'll be punishing.

It won't happen IMO. Step in and coach a team he didn't help build? Don't think he's that kind of coach. This is Payton looking out for himself and trying to get someone in who would step aside when he is back.

They promote from within and have a respectable season... then why do they need to pay Payton $6-8m/year? He'd be out of a job.

That's true. Another reason it probably won't is that Parcells' five-year Hall of Fame clock would have to start over again if he accepts another coaching position, according to the Pro Football HOF...
