Rogers Sportsnet kicks off its coverage of the World Baseball Classic next week, and opening day matches will include Canada's team, as well as powerhouses from South America and the Caribbean.

Additional reports, scores and highlights will also be available online, as part of the opverall coverage of the inaugural World Baseball Classic competition.

Coverage opens with a triple-header Tuesday, March 7 highlighted by Canada taking on South Africa at 9:00 p.m. (ET)/ 6:00 p.m. (PT) in Pool B action. This game will be broadcast tape delayed on Sportsnet West at 11:00 p.m. (MT).

The day opens with a marquee match-up between the heavy-hitting Dominican Republic and a strong-armed Venezuela team at 1:00 p.m. (ET)/ 10:00 a.m. (PT) on Sportsnet East and Sportsnet Ontario.

Another Pool B match-up - Mexico versus the United States, featuring Toronto Blue Jays' outfielder Vernon Wells, at 4:00 p.m. (ET)/ 1:00 p.m. (PT) on Sportsnet West and Sportsnet Pacific - rounds out the opening day coverage on Rogers Sportsnet.

The second day coverage of the World Baseball Classic on Rogers Sportsnet is wall-to-wall baseball with five games including Canada against the United States Wednesday, March 8 at 4:00 p.m. (ET)/ 1:00 p.m. (PT).

Canada must finish in the top two of Pool B if they are to advance to Round 2, which begins Sunday, March 12 on Rogers Sportsnet.

The Canadian squad includes a number of solid MLB players including 2004 NL Rookie of the Year Jason Bay (Pittsburgh Pirates), Matt Stairs (Kansas City Royals), Justin Morneau (Minnesota Twins) and Corey Koskie (Milwaukee Brewers). Canada's hopes will lean heavily on projected starting pitchers Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles), Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) and Adam Loewen (Baltimore Orioles).

The United States is heavily favoured to win Pool B, which likely leaves Canada and Mexico to battle it out for the remaining Round 2 berth.

Broadcast schedules and coverage of subsequent rounds will be announced shortly.
