Wireless Internet is the best thing since sliced bread. But it gets annoying when you hit dead spots or if you can't log on at the park just 60 feet from your condo. With its new Smart Router, Buffalo Technology is coming to the rescue.

The company's latest router, the AirStation Turbo G High Power Wireless Smart Router (WHR-HP-G54), delivers significantly increased range over earlier models.
The Smart Router has all the standard features of its predecessor, the WBR2-G54S, including a built-in DHCP server and high-level security encryption, such as Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA).
The Smart Router sits vertically or horizontally and features a cleverly placed external antenna. In addition, there is a switch on the bottom to toggle easily between router and access point mode. Now that's smart.
With a built-in amplifier, the Buffalo Smart Router claims superior range and performance over standard 802.11g wireless routers. In our testing, there was a noticeable improvement over other 802.11g implementations.
In an average three-bedroom house, certain rooms would get poor or nonexistent signals from an older 802.11g router, but the Smart Router produced good signals in each of these rooms. It was quite impressive performance.
Setting up the router was a breeze through the Web browser interface. The Smart Router can detect and configure an Internet connection automatically. During setup, the Automatic Channel feature selects the best channel for your wireless networking.
Much like the Linksys and its own one-touch security setup, the Smart Router supports the AirStation One-Touch Secure System (AOSS) that lets users create secure connections with other Buffalo wireless products with just a push of a button.
Although some might opt for the new MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) wireless routers, the $89 Smart Router, with its blend of superior range and ease of use, is an excellent choice for any home or small office network.
We give it a rating of 4 out of 5.
