The long awaited Resident Evil 5 demo has been released on XBL (For Gold Members) and for PS3 members on February 2nd. Has anyone tried it?
I tried it for a few minutes, and maybe it was just unfamiliarity, but it seems like they're trying too much with this game and are taking the almost-perfect RE4 formula and messing it up. Perhaps I'm just too used to the ultra-tight responsiveness of the Wii Controls, but the controls seem too sluggish to where you have to "wait" for your reticule to aim at the wanted target. I do have to say though that the PQ of this game blows away that of RE4 (as it damn well should considering the hardware differences between PS3/360 and Wii.)
Also, the "live" inventory system where you have to swap stuff on the fly adds 1 one point of tension and 3 points of frustration. You can't deny that it makes it more tense and realistic, but those don't make the game more fun. The ability to be killed by 1 or 2 shots in Call of Duty would make it more realistic, but would kill the fun factor significantly. You can't throw hordes of baddies at us and expect us to be able to not get frustrated while we try to switch weapons in between them biting on our asses.
Additionally, the extra character seems more like a burden than an asset. Sure it adds the capability of co-op gameplay, but my wife isn't big on gorey games and I'm not always shot in the ass about playing with chatty tweens on XBL.
Finally, I realize that this is just a demo, but a LITTLE bit of background and story would have been nice. They literally say, "Pick a level" and throw you in to the game with no real guidance other than the typical button prompts (Press X to pick up bullets, RT to Uppercut, etc.)
Maybe I'm just jaded from RE4: Wii Edition (which is one of the greatest games of all time) or just didn't have enough time to play the demo more extensively.* I may update this later, but I was curious as to what other people felt about this highly anticipated sequel.
*Oh that reminds me of ANOTHER ultra-annoying part of the demo. When you die (which you will, believe me,) rather than asking you to restart the level, it goes through the whole obligatory advertisement of the full game and shoots you back to the title screen. Also, you may find that some of your control settings are changed back to default when you do this! I shouldn't have to wait this long to get back into the action.
