For those that do not know yet, ALL Puerto Rican Birth Certificates will be invalid, null and void on July 1. The official motivation for this action by the PR legislature was to help combat identity theft and illegal immigration. There's myriad other reasons others have posted including an infusion of currency to a cash-strapped government. But this thread is not about the motivation, but the action we have to take to get a replacement document.
Last night while surfing the net I found that the Puerto Rico government web site now has a way to order a new document on line! I was amazed considering what one had to go though to get the old version of the birth certificate!
Go to www.pr.gov
Click on "Certificado de Nacimiento"
follow the instructions which are given in both English & Spanish.
You will need to take a digital picture of, or scan in your valid state ID (like a driver's license) as a jpg or pdf smaller than 1mb and attach it to the application when prompted. You can also use a digital pix or scan of a US passport.
The first copy costs $5 with additional copies $4 each and you must pay using a Visa or Mastercard.
There is also an option to do this over the mail (Must pay with money order, no checks) or, of course in person.
No new birth certificates will be issued until after July 1.
