Has anyone noticed that when you record OTA the amount of space it occupies is less even though the programing is HD. I really don't see a difference in picture but I sure do see a difference in the amount of space it takes up. I wonder why that is. Any ideas? By the way on the DVR recordings menu the recording does not show up as HD as the others do when you record another High Definition Channel.

Are you recording an OTA HD channel or just an OTA Digital one? Digital channels take about the same amount as Dish's sd channels, then Dish HD channels with OTA HD about two different amounts (think it may have to do with 720p vs 1080i, which ever the channel is broadcast at).

How can you tell if a TV station is broadcasting their OTA channel in 720P vs 1080i?

Every OTA HD recording I've seen is around twice as big as a similar HD recording from satellite. MPEG2 vs MPEG4.

OTA HD using MPEG2 ABSOLUTELY uses more space on the HDD than Dish's HD at MPEG4. The poster may have recorded an SD program via the OTA digital and compared that with a Dish HD LiL.

It is true that OTA HD recordings do not have the HD watermark that HD channel recording via satellite have although the program may, in fact, be in HD. It would be nice of Dish can figure out how to provide the HD watermark to the OTA HD recordings. I really do depend upon the HD watermark and have had to double-take and check the channel before I realize that it is an HD OTA recording.
