I just bought a new tv, Hd etc. I currently have two Dish network receivers and each receiver will connect to two tvs. You will soon see I am no techno geek don't make too much fun of me. I went to hook my tv up and the best connection I could make was with an S video cable the receiver is a 322 and I know it is not an HD receiver. I know the S video is better than the RCA tried them both and switched them back an forth. all things being the same Would HDMI or Component improve the quality of my picture even farther? I have determined to get either of those connections I need a different receiver. I have read where most own their receivers, what is the advantage to owning your own receiver? With what dish network is telling me I don't see an advantage. If I replace the receiver I have (322) with a 222( it is an HD reciever and has the connections I seek) with no subscription to HD 1. would it work, would I get a picture or would the 222 have to be activated before it would work? 2. If it worked would I see any improvement in the picture, granted I connected with component or HDMI? The improvement I saw between RCA and S video; if I saw that much with a component connection or 2x that with HDMI I would be happy, at least for the time being. Dish network is insisting that to get that receiver I have to sign up for HD, sign a new 24 month contract I refuse to sign a new contract have been a customer for almost 4 years now.

Most people lease their receivers.

If you go out and upgrade to a 222 your going to pay a HD enabling $7 fee just for having that receiver, for $3 more you can get HD essentials... it would be stupid not to pay for HD in that case.

Speaking entirely standard def, would a HDMI connection make a difference? I'm sure it would under a microscope but chances of noticing it with the naked eye I highly doubt it.

Now if you were to go out and buy a 222 on your own, you might be able to get your local channels with no HD package provided you already have the satellites pointed at that location and your paying for local channels... if you do buy one to avoid a contract and do want the HD package you'd have to go out on your own and buy the necessary equipment to receive the proper satellites for HD, either 61.5 or 129... in some markets for HD locals it would require 118.7, complete dish altogether.

It seemed that most people owned their receivers, i didn't know. I really don't want to go into another contract. There is no reason to upgrade and basically pay for HD and not get it ( $7 a month vs $10 a month). If the picture does not improve no reason to buy my own receiver. I assume if I bought my own receiver it would have to be activated and when Dish network activated it they would tack on the $7 a month HD acess fee anyway. I don't think any of my local channels are available in HD. I need to look at Direct TV and the Local cable. Purchasing the TV only gets you half way there.

Apparently, you have an HD tv - why would you not get the HD subscription & reciever?? Do you only do HD over the air via the TV? I can't imagine shelling out the bucks for my HDTV & not having any HD to watch.

In my opinion, you will not see much of a difference over HDMI vs. S-Video if you are watching SD channels. SD always looks a little worse once viewed on an HD display. If you really don't want the HD, it makes no sense to upgrade your receivers.

I had a DVR625 before which I was very happy with the pq, with a HD TV. But I found a great deal on the VIP622 and time was running out on HD Absolute.
Now I find the pq even better. To me the best part is some of the HD channels, that you can not get without a HD receiver.

362 HDNET
364 HDTHR
366 UNIHD
369 Palladia

Never mind I got Max for the 1cent deal. My bill went down and I got some great channels. I'm watching ZZ Top: Live From Texas which I couldn't do on Dish without HD receiver.
For me I'm glad I did it.

Good luck on making your choice. :)

I agree. You may notice a bit better picture actually, but the key word being "bit".
Unless you want to upgrade to HD, don't bother spending the money on an HD receiver. I did one the other day for a guy that bought a 722 off of ebay. He didn't upgrade to hd, just wanted the receiver and wanted to own it instead of leasing it, so it can be done, but the picture quality was really not any better.

Seeing the equipment you currently have, with the 322's if you have 1 line going from the dish to the 322 your upgrade may be simple enough to upgrade it yourself and purchase a second dish 500 and point it at 61.5, all you would need is a Dish 500 a DP Dual and a few feet of coax... if your willing to shell out the cash for a 222 my guess is you'd be willing to shell out the extra for the second dish... then for a grand total of $10 a month tacked on to your current bill you'd have HD essentials.

Keep in mind I don't know what your line of sight is, nor do I know your geographic location.

Thanks for all the advice. I am as I said before not very knowledgeable about a lot of this stuff. I am learning and this has been helpful. I am sure in time I will get HD. I went from a 27" flat screen ST tv to a 50" DLP HD everything, right now my senses are still somewhat overwhelmed. I was just continuing my self education and read some stuff about the connections making a difference. This is a place where I can ask questions and get answers that are not tainted by people who aren't trying to sell me something.

can I save money with DVR Advantage

VIP 622 and Seperator
