As Thomas says you must have a card and it must have been activated.
No "kill hit" signal was sent to receivers plugged in and active--in
other words the receiver had to be legit and service paid up. Ours
still works just fine. There were a bunch of receivers stolen at one
point and have been selling on ebay to unwary purchasers.
