When I had Directv installed, the HD DVRs needed two RG-6 cables ran from the satellite to the receiver in order to be able to record 2 different shows and such. Now I am getting a Dish Network installed. I was told that the Dish HD DVRs (722 and 612) don't need two cables ran from the satellite. I was told they only need a single cable, and that you can still record two shows at once or watch one and record another. Is that true? If so, why does D* need two cables from satellite while E* only needs one? Does anyone know the reason? Or am I getting told the completely wrong information.

You have the right info.

I know DIrectv only needs one wire now with their SWM setups but they use to need two cables for each dual tuner setup

Dish uses DishProPlus which basically "stacks" all the different satellites onto one line (versus 2) and at the receiver it all sorts out. Dish has a "separator" (looks like a splitter) that separates the signal to both tuners and allows independent viewing/recording on either tuner
