I will be visiting India next month and would like to have some info before going there. My parents have dish tv subscription. As per Indian govt rules, DTH companies cannot have proprietary receivers like here is US. All dish tv subscribers can receive FTA channels with same equipment. Moreover dish tv broadcast is in Ku band and not DBS. LNBF which comes with the equipment is 0.7 or 0.6 db NF. I would like to take a better LNBF and a motor from here and set it up there. Appreciate if you could answer
  1. How to decide if a universal LNBF is required or a standard?
  2. Is there any LNBF which can do C and Ku band in one?
  3. How do I decide on the size of Dish required for C-Band? Is there any formula for calculation? (They have a 90 CM dish now for Ku, I have seen people using 4' or 5' dish for C-band)

1/ I would use a universal as its a world standard (except here)
2/Yes there are... http://www.skyvision.com/store/mi3500024.html
3/ Have a look at the below table, then have a look at the satellites footprint, compare the EIRP to give you the correct size of dish needed.
