Question for my brother here...

He just got a Sony XBR 34" HDTV that is working great but when he tries to watch a PAL dvd the picture is all messed up. The same dvds on the same player work on his old tv. I have to guess its a native res. issue where its trying to upconvert the dvds and its not working since its PAL.
Any thoughts?

While I am thinking on it do you happen to know the make & model of the NTSC/PAL player in question and what the connection method is? Also, is it connected directly to the display or through a A/V receiver unit that has switching? I had an upconverting NTSC/PAL, region free DVD player connected to my HD FPTV via component, through an A/V switching unit, and have no issues; makes and models are in the signature.

I think its a pioneer player that works fine when its hooked up to a non HDTV. We tried component and svideo with the same results. I had him look in the menu and he said there was no resolution settings but I don't buy it, I would think there has to be. I'll be over there in the next couple days to check it out.

I'm guessing that his DVD player is a progressive scan model that can't play PAL DVDs in that mode. My DVD player does just the opposite and only plays PAL DVDs in the progressive scan mode.
