Hello all. I am new to fta. I have a few questions about my set up.

1. On G19, my signal quality level varies from 20 to 60 on a clear, sunny day, depending on what channel I am on. Is such large variance normal? I have a 30" Winegard dish.

2. Is there any way to back up my favorite channels to a PC from Viewsat Ultra receiver? It didn't come with any software CD (it was used), but in specs, it mentions RS-232 port for connection to a PC.

Thanks in advance.

signal level just lets you know if a connection to the LNB is made. If there isnt the signal usually is around 30-50 (again depending on model)

The only time I really use the signal strength is on my old Pansat when aiming a dish. If you're near the satellite the signal meter part (not quality, signal strength) jumps from 70 to above 80. Then I know I have to adjust elevation

I see..... Thank you Iceberg. And another question.. are there any FTA boxes that can receive both local OTA ATSC DTV signal and SAT? I have two set top boxes now, and it's inconvenient having to keep switching video inputs on the TV to go back and forth between DTV and SAT sources.

some of the HD receivers can
Coolsat 8100/8000 (8100 has PVR option, 8000 doesnt)
Digiwave Diamond
Pansat 9200
Sonicview 8000 (I think)

only one still available (not discontinued) is the 9200. The other 3 can be found on Ebay

All those receivers are a compromise, either for FTA or for OTA (or both).
There have been a couple recent threads where folks asked for a combo receiver.
If ya go that way, shop carefully; if you find one cheap, give it a go. ;)
See those discussions for more info.

I have four or five sources for entertainment video, and select the proper one through the TV inputs.
Your mileage may vary. :)

another option may be hxxp://www.amazon.com/1-Out-Selector-Switch-Remote-AVs41I/dp/B000RXVITM or hxxp://www.amazon.com/5-port-switch-Remote-Control-1-out/dp/B000FHGONA

That switch at Amazon looks pretty good.
I got a 3-port with HDMI cables and remote at Meritline for somewhere in the low-$20 range, last year.
But they have lots to choose from.

You can back-up the channel list from the menu on a usb drive and then save it to your pc or keep it on the usb.
