It's that time again - DirecTV will host their Q2 Earnings Call at 2pm EST Thursday 8/7. We'll have live coverage in this thread of any items of consumer interest. Typically, these calls discuss mostly financial information, but also may include hardware, programming, or satellite plans.

You can listen to a rebroadcast of the webcast here:
The DIRECTV Group, Inc. - Investor Relations

Thanks for being SatelliteGuys!

The notes are now complete, make sure to see the next-to-last question in post 9. :)

For the financial results and press release, see this thread:
http://www.satelliteguys.us/directv-forum/144717-directv-2nd-quarter-financial-results.html

This recap will focus on things of consumer interest, such as pricing, hardware, programming, etc. I'll include a few financials, but not many.

Begining of the call is mostly financial, so stay tuned.

Outstanding subscriber growth and ARPU (average revenue per sub).

Churn was higher, but 20,000 was in Brazil due to one time event.

They felt numbers were very solid compared to competitors.

US sub growth consistent with expectations, 129k total.
Bell South partnership ending affects growth, but less than they expected.

Direct sales (ordering directly through DirecTV) over half new subs - something they target.

They are focussing on reducing long-term customer (past year) churn. Introducing loyality programs in second half to help. (See this thread: http://www.satelliteguys.us/directv-forum/144055-directv-loyalty-progam-coming-soon.html )

Now more than 7.5M customers with adavnced services (HD, DVR, or both). ARPU on these customers over $100 / month. 40% gowth over last year.

PPV & Event revenues are down

Less upfront fees from customers on advanced boxes (Meaning they charge less or did more promos - also includes many HD receiver upgrades).

800-Connect services 15% of orders, acquired by DirecTV last month.

15% decline in capital expenses, $200M. Due to increased use of refurbished boxes, more advanced service customers, and nearing end of satellite fleet expansion costs.

Quarter accomplishments:

VOD live
D11 turned on
130 HD channels this month

Own about 1/3 of our install services business

Economic trends having "limited impact", not no impact, just limited.

Questions / Answers Portion:

Retention spending down...cost savings on boxes or labor?
Retention cost reduction due to all of those, leasing boxes, efficency in service costs improving, we kept higher price boxes in 06/07. We are on top of the demand, and are now catching up on the demand for MPEG2 switches.

Competitor spending up, where?
Spending up pretty much everywhere, cable, echostar, telco. Everyone more aggressive.

Appears that bundle customer to cable, value to dish, high-end to Direct. Any look at going back after value customer?
We've got great momentum in the market, HD demand continues, and we have more coming. We're not blindly pursing growth, but to build value. We're comfortable with the growth.
We look at all segments of market.

Yep Directv is really in a good spot right now, as Chase is saying. It really shows with the low churn and the increase in subs. I liked hearing the words out of his mouth, " more is coming." in regards to hd services :)

Broadband business mostly DSL, yet market is mostly growing in cable, how does this affect D*?
DSL from telcos is meaningful to us. We hope telcos will focus more on DSL initatives so we can compete better. We focus on having a great video product and cust will finds a broadband solution other places. Many of our customers have cable broadband and our video.

VOD early, how many customers using, patterns?
VOD is really early, no specifics to put out. just launched last month, small customer base.
Not driving maket place now, HD-DVR driving market place.

Ways to work with Dish?
Dish, really nothing there now. There are large things we can do together, but it is complicated and difficult. Continue to look at ways to create value for both. (Nothing really happening essentially).

Dish competiton?
Dish in first half increased tv ads, paper ads, etc. First for them, they are spending more. Free programming offers, more aggressive. The industry will continue to get more competitive. We will continue to raise our game.

MDU opportunities?
(multi-dwelling) 20% of people, we are way under penetrated. Some long-term contracts make it difficult. Didn't have the organizatioanl focus on it, built our focus with new technology over past 12 months, launching in past 6 months. Enormous opportunity for growth.

Latin America results good, undervalued?
Create more visibility for investor to see our performance. We can continue to provide better visibility.

Channel count advantage? Network constraints by competitors affect VOD?
HD counts making claims about their HD, some have muddy water counts and press releases. We have a great position in HD and continue to add. Great strength in our sports position, inclduing RSNs and package. Locals, going to be 80% HD local penetration. Creating a brand leadership position. Announced 1080p coming (VOD), we have created and comfortable with a leadership position.
There are limits to how you can manipulate customers, as it shakes out it will be good for our service.

Bell South territories, how many have churned? AT&T partnership in 09?
Bell south data too specific for public, they can't target our old customers.
AT&T will be on their time frame, probably end of year and some lead-time. Up to them.

Telco channel going away, more sales through direct channel, how will this evolve?
Direct sales is our largest, 1/2, dealers still help and we are supporting this, increase as telco reduced.

Possible D* / E* merger based on sat radio and environment changes since 02?
Nothing new to say. Journalists may just need to fill a page. Sat radio merger not irrelevant, but there are alot of differences in the businesses. Many overplaying the meaning of that decision.

Subscriber gains, where they coming from? VOD offering, hours?
New customers coming from a broad mix, many from cable and dish, few from telcos as they are brand new. Biggest segment from cable.
VOD, 3000-4000 hours, some push-to-receiver movies (Movies-Now), HD very small portion but will grow.
VOD numbers not large yet, just launched.

Jason. Was that Q & A with reporters? They were the ones that brought up the Dish/Direct merger??

Jason, One of the investors asked about the possibility of a Liberty and Directv merger(into one company). I did not hear what was said. What did Chase say?

Usually not so much reporters as analysts for big trading houses. You can find out who they were and whom they represent by listening to the conference recording when it becomes available.

ARPU (with the advanced products) over 100 a month tell me a few years ago that my average bill would be close to 100 and I would have thought you were joking But it is what it is, the technology is outstanding and I look foward to the future it does look bright with Directv!

Was there any word on what HD channels will be added on Aug 14th? I know about the 12 RSN what national HD channels are they adding?
